The real hero of s8?

Spike.

He turned up in the moment of need, knew what was happening, helped every way he could, never got distracted from the mission, refused to be caught up in any of the drama, and was written out going after a demon that would otherwise escape and cause havoc.

So, despite s8 trashing pretty much EVERYTHING I loved about the Buffy-verse (Spuffy included) it does leave me Spike the Champion intact. Which is more than I expected, to be honest.

(Not saying that others weren't good btw. Xander was pretty solid, Faith was awesome [even though I'm still grumbly about some aspects] and Andrew, bless his cotton socks, did well too.)

How did you manage to get paid for that?

I was asked by the people doing the Whedonistas book to write an essay on s8. Unfortunately it won't be included, but I still get paid. (Not much, mind you, but it's the principle that counts!) See this post for more details.
