They are my shipping blueprint and their story is made of complete and utter awesome and win! (Although they'd both frown on that phrasing. A lot.)

ETA: Got the book out and re-read their conversation... I'd forgotten how laugh-out-loud funny it is on top of everything else. Plus, so civilised - I always loved that. No hysterics or anything silly. Just witty and mature and intelligent. *happy sigh*

Have moved on to Have His Carcase. I just wish I liked detective stories more in general. My brain's kind of hazing out at times going 'yeah, yeah, yeah--clues, whatever. Can we get back to the character stuff now?'

Anyway, the wonderful thing about those books is that they work beautifully as novels in their own right, and can be read and re-read ad nauseam for all the character stuff. Also, the next book is 'Gaudy Night' which is set in Oxford and is all academia. I predict that you'll love it to pieces. :)

Although you're right, the code breaking is nifty (if long). I loooooved the basic idea of the code but then I did end up skimming most of the actual breaking of it. I rather wish they'd cut away or something and said "and then they broke the code--go ahead, do it yourself and then come back when you know what the letter said." It's a very second-hand sort of satisfaction to be lead step by step through something and then handed the answer. Come to think of it, that's rather how I feel about detective stories in general. I do treat books like puzzles (to such an extent that I think I badly confused several of my professors with my approach to literature), but there has to be something left open for me to work with. I'm not one to guess ahead at endings--I absorb everything that's given to me and then I get to work.
