Watching '300'...

It's... extra ordinarily awful. Everything is sepia tinted and stylised (although very pretty) and the script makes everyone sound like fratboys. Plus the accents are *really* weird - I don't believe anyone for a second. It's like... watching a really OTT & camp & ridiculous send-up of LotR. (The amount of guy-liner is seriously impressive!) Although reading [livejournal.com profile] history_spork's post whilst watching is nicely entertaining.

Also, I now need to re-watch Vogue. :)

Hehehe, I adore 300, it's just a ginormous pseudomasculist bunch of slashy flowers. It's so cute in it's idiocy.

Have you seen that vid:

I hereby take this opportunity to point you to Tet Zoo, one of my favorite science blogs, in which a real live zoologist (emphasis on pterosaurs and certain kinds of dinosaurs) occasionally geeks out about cryptozoology, and also, it so happens, about war rhinos. (I have actually never seen 300, but I know it has war rhinos in it!)

I literally spent the entire time watching that movie laughing my head off. I don't think I spent more than a minute of that movie not laughing. It is so beyond absurd. I think my favorite is when the king calls the Athenians "boy-lovers." Dude. Spartans are famous for their boy-lovin'.

300 was one of those movies you see because someone else really, really wants to watch it.

I was amused that Iran apparently too the movie as a personal insult

Don't tell my buddy Kirk, but that movie really is in the "Shakocopus" class, isn't it?

I really, really hated that movie. I wasn't planning on watching it in the first place, but a friend of mine gave me a downloaded copy he'd got from someone, and I've never seen a film that made me so angry, or made me feel so dirty for having seen it. Racist, borderline-fascist piece of crap.

Hee. The first time I watched 300, I was mightily confused for precisely those things you mention; plus -ancient history buff that I am- I couldn't see why Xerxes should be depicted as a half-naked giant with piercings all over. It improved on second viewing, though, when my expectations were sufficiently lowered to be able to appreciate it for it's pretty pictures alone.

Never saw this film and doesn't intend to do it but the running commentary by History_spork is absolutely brilliant. Wipes tears of laugh.

Thank you Elisi for sharing.

ITA with everyone who's advised you to see Vogue.

viewing it will increase your enjoyment of 300 immensely --- in fact, you should've seen it BEFORE 300, so you could've laughed throughout the movie as you hummed the music.....
