I'm starting to see more signs of the "panic" part. While AO3 is a great archival option and DW is a great resource for backing up individual LJ accounts (or IJ), the problem is that communities can't be imported. I don't know what options there are for that.

My sense is that the bar on community imports is more a political one than a technical one. Being able to import communities could be a problem in terms of ownership, plus it would add a lot of work to the import process. But I don't think it's actually an inability to import those types of accounts.

But yes, if LJ continues to sink under this pressure it's going to be a disaster on a lot of fronts.

Considering what's happening now, it makes me wonder if the decision about community ownership was done on purpose to prevent usurpation of a forum by some who might want to shut it down. But you're right, it does facilitate some of the issues surrounding who can mirror or transfer a community. DW has already done community transfers but they have been done on a case-by-case basis which is pretty labor intensive.

Yes, things always get lost or broken in moves so it's a good analogy. In the case of Top 5 for example, it'll end up being a record of stuff created rather than a functional archive because 90% of what it points to is on LJ.
