Wordcount: Approx 1400 words.

Chapter 3

As it turned out, ‘Five minutes to Belgium’ was some kind of Doctor-y shorthand for ‘We might experience some slight turbulence and then explode’, although the New Doctor was keen to stress that it’d only be ‘a very small explosion’, something neither Rose, nor her Doctor, found very reassuring.

“What happened?” Rose’s Doctor asked, and the New Doctor did a rather embarrassed sort of whole body shuffle thing, that Rose had never seen before. He really was extraordinarily peculiar.

“Oh the usual. Ran into an old enemy with a grudge and a better-than-average plan, who somehow managed to throw us into the Void. But. We managed to get here with minimum damage - the impending explosion apart - and since there’s three of us now to work together, I’m sure we’ll have her back to normal in no time at all! So come on now, no time to lose!”

Three?” Rose’s Doctor asked, looking around as if he expected a third Doctor to pop out of thin air.

“He means me, Sweetheart,” River drawled, and Rose’s Doctor did a double-take.

“You mean-”

Yes she can fly the TARDIS,” the New Doctor cut in rather impatiently, already working on the controls.

“River, I need you to calculate the vectors for the time differentials. You can make moon eyes at me - him me - later.”

River rolled her eyes and ran up the stairs, and in moments both Doctors and River were busy running around, twisting and tweaking. Soon enough Rose found herself - along with Rory and Amy - directed into holding and pulling and turning and ’for God’s sake don’t touch that!’. Some things apparently never changed.

Finally – after an intense couple of minutes – the TARDIS shuddered and jerked and clearly did whatever-it-was that it was supposed to do to stop whatever-it-was that was happening, if the giant burst of sparks was anything to go by.

“Ah! Excellent! Well done everyone!” the New Doctor said, clapping, and Rose let go of the four buttons she’d been pressing, only to be knocked off her feet as an aftershock hit, and - for good measure - banging her head against the rails as she went down.

Looking up through the stars dancing in front of her eyes, she saw two worried Doctors crouched down over her. Her own Doctor was gently propping her up, as the New Doctor was scanning her with his sonic, which looked like it was glowing green. Just how hard had she hit her head?

“Rose? You with us?” her Doctor asked, and she grimaced a smile.

“Yeah, think so,” she said, before the New Doctor cut in.

“Say ‘aah’!” he demanded, and she stared at him dumbly.

“What?”

“Say ‘aah’!” he repeated, slowly, and feeling like a complete fool she did as he said.

“OK, you’re fine!” he decided, after carefully inspecting her throat, and then snapped his screwdriver shut and tucked it back into an inside pocket.

“Wait – was that a new one?” Rose’s Doctor asked, and the New Doctor beamed and pulled it back out again, flicking it open and showing it off. Rose’s Doctor reached out, and a second later the New Doctor was busy explaining how opening it was ‘all in the wrist’, and Rose just stared from one to the other.

Upstaged by a screwdriver...

“Hey – want a hand?” Amy asked, and Rose accepted the offer gratefully, pulling herself to her feet.

“Thanks. It’s this floor – how do you ever stay upright? I liked it better before.”

‘And now my transformation to Grumpy Old Companion is complete’ she thought to herself, as Amy tilted her head.

“What was it like before?”

“Oh it was... smaller than now. And sort of... corally. Like being inside one of those round shells. The console was all see-through and glowing green, and the floor was grated.”

River shook her head.

“The floor wouldn’t be a problem if he’d just use the stabilisers. But that’d be too easy... You know what he’s like!”

She shot a fond look at the two Doctors, now busy discussing the pros and cons of their screwdrivers (Rose’s Doctor’s had taken ages to create, but it worked pretty well), and utterly unaware of anything around them.

“See this is why I married a human nurse and not an alien Doctor,” Amy said, entwining her hand with Rory’s. “No offence by the way.”

“None taken!” River replied, causing Rose to frown. Before she could ask what she meant, however, River grabbed her shoes from where she’d hung them next to the screen. “But will you excuse me? I really need to get changed. Good Lord I hope the wardrobe hasn’t moved again. Or ended up in the swimming pool...”

She swanned off up a staircase, in the process deftly kicking the New Doctor.

“Hey- new world. Find somewhere interesting!”

“What? Oh yes, of course.”

Not long after (Rose made sure to hold on tightly), they landed somewhere or other, and River re-emerged, this time far more sensibly dressed.

The New Doctor walked to the top ot the stairs and looked around, making sure he had his Companions’ attention.

“River, Amy, Rory - welcome to Pete’s World!”

He lifted his hand and snapped his fingers - and the TARDIS door swung open.

Rose blinked, and turned to her own Doctor, who muttered “Show-off” under his breath.

Then the New Doctor swivelled on the spot, finger still raised, and pointed at her.

“Ah. Which reminds me. I might have to borrow some money.”

“Um... sure. What for?”

He smiled triumphantly.

“I’m going to buy a fez!”

Of all the things Rose had expected, this was the last. But River didn't look surprised at all, just slowly shook her head.

“Oh no, you’re not.”

The New Doctor looked at her determinedly.

“Yes I am.”

“No. You. Are. Not!”

“Yes I am! Fezzes are cool! And I would very much appreciate it if you didn’t shoot it. Again.”

River smiled dangerously and pulled a futuristic gun out of her handbag.

“Just watch me.”

Popping the gun back in her bag she tossed her curls over her shoulder and walked down the stairs, the New Doctor loping after her.

“Listen River, violence never solves anything-”

“Pot, kettle, darling!” River shot back and strode out of the TARDIS, the New Doctor following, waving his hands around.

“I do not destroy perfectly innocent hats at the drop of a... hat. River-”

His voice faded out and Amy chuckled.

“Oh they are so married!”

Before Rose could react to this (what did she mean 'married'?), Amy grasped Rory’s arm excitedly. “Oh! Parallel universe. There could be another us out there!”

“Amy- I don’t think that’s a good idea...” Rory protested as she dragged him down the stairs, and Rose turned to her own Doctor and shook her head.

“Is it just me, or are they all totally mad?”

Then she remembered that the neighbourhood kids were now banned from visiting after the incident with the sonic trampoline and the (failed) attempt at automatic sand, and cleared her throat.

“Actually - forget I said that.”

Just then the New Doctor stuck his head through the door.

“Come on you two! Not leaving you in here all by yourselves.”

“And what is that supposed to mean?” Rose’s Doctor asked lightly, as Rose took his arm and they, too, descended the stairs.

“Oh don’t pretend that you don’t know that I know exactly what you are thinking!” the New Doctor said. “And I will not allow it.”

He shook his finger at Rose’s Doctor.

“She’s had a very rough time of it lately, poor girl, and she needs some rest.”

Rose’s Doctor looked vaguely guilty as they walked out the door.

“Would have brought her back,” he said petulantly, and the New Doctor shook his head.

“That’s what we always say.”

Just as Rose realised that they were talking about the TARDIS, she got distracted from the conversation by the sight of her mother striding across the lawn from the Tyler Mansion (how did this qualify as ‘interesting’? Or had he got it wrong again?).

Her mother didn’t stop until she reached the motley group, then looked them over, hands on hips:

“Oh you have got to be kidding me!”

*MORE DYING LAUGHING*

.....I wonder if Eleven's the type to gleefully greet Jackie with open arms..... I also wonder if that will have consequences for him..... And I wonder if his strangely good chemistry with "older looking" women will have a play in it.

As much as Amy seems to ship River/Doctor, Eleven... no matter how much he's getting intrigued by her.... will deny, deny, deny.

Still want more Ten/River just because it would be awkward and hilarious

LOVED them all piloting the TARDIS! LOVED IT!

Rose needs to learn to accept change. Like Sarah Jane...

Aaannd Eleven treating Rose like how he treats Amy..... like how a doting father would. Saw that coming.

Needs more Ten/Eleven interaction. It's very fun. "That's what we always say" indeed.

River can taunt Ten with spoilers he'll never, ever, get to know XD

oh and

She’s had a very rough time of it lately, poor girl, and she needs some rest.

Considering the poor TARDIS was stuck in a state between explosion and non-explosion and warmed the Earth for nearly 2000 years,... rough time no kid!

Also.... needs more Amy and Rory. Just because.

Can't waaaiiittt XD

You're gonna have to, 'cause I'm determined to write up my Big Bang thoughts next! (Thank you though!)

Oh, yays! *waits patiently for story but now can't wait for reaction post* XD

Funny how Rory and Amy being both and alive and married in the first section isn't a spoiler for the finale, but the fact that River destroyed the Doctor's fez is...

I'm really enjoying this! Perfect way to get my feet wet, and I look forward to more! :)

Very interesting parallels and interactions between Sarah Jane/Doctor, Rory/Amy, Amy/Eleven, River/Doctor and Rose/Ten too. I have but one wish- more Rory? I'd love him to be more vocal and get more funny lines. He's kinda Xanderish in his sense of humor, IMHO.

What's automatic sand? ;)

I think 11/Fez just might be my new OTP. Fez's are cool!

This story is so much (vaguely guilty) fun. Rose not knowing what the heck is going on is half the fun, and I think River is the other half. But the universe(s) need more River. And Jackie; that interaction might be fun!

Awww, this is really adorable. I especially love how you have Amy "see, this is why I married a human". Adorable. Care if I friend you so's I don't miss the next part?

Oh, that was fantastic. Perfectly lighthearted and witty!
"I am now even more painfully, impossibly, grateful that you didn’t regenerate last time we met and I suddenly love my Doctor even more than before..." :D (Right there with you, Rose. Oh, Ten, how I miss you...)
Looking forward to the next chapter. ;)

Too lazy to login. And besides, I REALLY need to revamp my LJ, I haven't updated it in months and months - since before I discovered Doctor Who, even...

Utterly BRILLIANT. I adore how you're hinting it, but STILL keeping River and Eleven's exact relationship rather ambiguous! :D Just the way Moffat keeps torturing us. It's incredible how well you're bouncing every character off each other. This is the fic I WISH I was brilliant enough to write. And now you're bringing Jackie-bloody-Tyler in... God help us all.

Will we get to see Tony? <3 D'aww. I can see Ten picking Tony up and chattering excitedly with that little, what, four year old? Ten's that mental age, after all. And Eleven watching, somewhere between perplexed, amused, and WTF?

I ADORE RORY. Please add more Rory. (Sorry. For ever moment I'm obsessing over David Tennant and/or Ten, I'm obsessing over Rory Pond (whose last name is Pond, not Williams, for the rest of time, as far as I'm concerned). With occasional bits of Eleven!obsession in between. :D)

Eleven's voice is so difficult, but you've it spot on. ^.~ "I do NOT destroy perfectly innocent hats at the drop of a... hat." Oh, that is SO Eleven! LOVE it! Your River and Eleven banter is just fantastic!

And thanks for using perhaps one of my favorite Eleven quotes in your summary.

Ack... I know there was one other part or line or something I wanted to rant about... Oh, never mind! Continue this soon, you! Maybe next time I'll remember to login, and will finally get around to reopening my LJ account...

Hee heheheheheheee *delighted dance*

Have I told you how much I love crackfic? Because I do. Especially when it's as well written as this. Although . . . frankly with this show I'm at a bit of a loss about where the line really is. The show itself is frequently so cracky that you can try to come up with something insane and over the top, and then you remember that the show pretty much did that already. It reminds me of FlickFilosopher, who is always arguing in her reviews that both RTD and Moffat are, essentially, fanboys writing fic and then putting it on screen.

Thank you for pointing me over to this. I've been essentially ignoring the fic all season, with the exception of short River stuff, because there's just been too stinking much to keep up with and I figured, while the episodes were airing, best to prioritize analysis. Now that we've reached the long drought, however, I will no doubt work my way through just about everything that's ever been written. This was a good place to start.

Definitely looking forward to more (and looking forward to Jackie Tyler? Never had that before. Very strange feeling.) and to your Big Bang meta.

I think I labelled it crack!fic just so I didn't have to worry too much about plot and stuff like that, and just let all the characters bounce off each other for chapters on end.
Words cannot express the extent to which I approve of this. But then, I am on record many times over about how I don't believe in plot.

Also it's hard to write/read when canon is constantly evolving and every episode tends to throw up more things.
I'm *still* hesitant to really tackle River because I have too much respect for all the things that Moffat hasn't yet done with her. What is wrong with me?

I'm looking at my to-be-written list in my head, and quietly sobbing...
I never fulfill my lists anyway, so I've taught myself not to get worked up about it. As it is, the list of things that I haven't written this season is longer than the list of things I have (and I've never been this prolific before Doctor Who).

I think I'll try my best to get it to hang together and just post it as soon as I can, nevermind that it's a huge rambly mess...
I think the consolation prize for being neither a college student nor a professional is that sometimes you can just throw up the rambly mess and let whoever wants to pick through it pick through it.

Nothing at all! But the fact is that we don't know who she is yet, and clearly that insight will be 'when everything changes'.
Damn you Moff! *shakes fist* You are so infuriating and lovely at the same time. Oh, heck, I can't stay mad at you.

Actually, just had a brainstorm about River: a lot of the speculation and fic about younger River kind of rubs me the wrong way and/or doesn't feel right, and I've had a hard time putting my finger on why, beyond the fact that so many fics make her very young when she first meets the Doctor, and I really do think she must have been a fairly mature woman already in order for their relationship to have worked out so equally. Here's the thing, though: a lot of people are assuming (myself included) that River was some kind of ruffian, gun for hire, jewel thief, super villian, or just some other already fairly larger-than-life kind of person before she met the Doctor. What if that's all wrong? There's a side of River, when she's not around the Doctor, that's very serious and even buttoned up. Particularly when she's stressed, she really clamps down (see: Angels episodes) and you can see her holding her tongue, pushing her emotions down, and forcibly concentrating on her work. And, lest we forget, she is a doctor and eventually a professor. I think that's legitimate rather than a con, and you don't become those things by being frivolous and causing trouble across the galaxy. I think River was perhaps a much more serious and less adventurous person before she met the Doctor. She really does bloom around him, just opens up, goes for the theatricality, becomes more expressive . . . I can see that being something the Doctor brought out of her.

*dances* I love finding a kindred spirit! It's not that I don't like plot, it's just that what interests me is character development and exploration. Plot is just a tool for achieving that. :)
*massive hugs*

I do not destroy perfectly innocent hats at the drop of a... hat

:)

You said at the start of Chapter Two that Eleven was a little tricky to write, but your Eleven reads like he's writing himself!

(It amused me lots that on Amazon shortly after The Big Bang, fezzes appeared in the "What other customers are looking at right now" section.)

The only thing that could possibly improve this story would be the introduction of Rose's mum, so I am enormously excited about Chapter Four!

I love this so much!!!

He smiled triumphantly.
“I’m going to buy a fez!”

I almost died laughing! (might have something to do with the fact that its 2am, but still...)

I love the interaction between Eleven and River. They are so married!
I'm gonna go read the rest of this now. :)
