I sincerely doubt that anyone could have had as thoroughly an English day as we have had.
Firstly, a Happy Birthday to
wendylouwho! I hope you're OK, dear, and that life is treating you well. *hugs*
I do like to be beside the seaside...
Quite simply, we had a most marvellous time! We set off nicely early towards Whitby, driving through gorgeous rolling green hill-y landscape, with hedgerows and big trees picturesquely stood in the middle of fields. (At one point we passed a sing saying 'Local traffic only'. There was a beat, then Darcy said "It's a local road for local people!" and I replied "We will have no trouble here!" Sometimes we are completely of one mind!) Then the fields turned into heather-covered moors and soon we found ourselves in sunny Whitby. (We even made it to mass only approx 5 minutes late! Sat-nav is a fabulous and wonderous thing that we appreciate greatly!) (Oh, I forgot to mention that we have a new car - hence the sat-nav. It [the car] is fabulous and everything works and I dare not say any more for fear of jinxing it!)
But the most English moment of all came at lunchtime when we sat on the pier eating fish&chips in the warm sun - trying to ignore the cool wind - with seagulls flying overhead and Morris-dancers performing just a few yards away. (A little further up was a mini funfair, with obligatory popsongs played over a decrepit sound system.)
Sometimes I love this country more than is entirely reasonable.
Anyway, then we went down to the beach (also windy, although we managed to find a fairly sheltered spot) and the children dug holes in the sand with their brightly coloured spades, and one of them decided to try to paddle a little (and only got her trousers a tiny bit wet!). Darcy went off and bought us all '99's (ice cream w. a flake in it), and the Cherub got ice cream ALL OVER HER FACE! (It was very cute.) Darcy had also brought their kite and they had a lot of fun flying it. (*I* stayed on the carpet, and thus was the only one who didn't get my feet/shoes wet.)
When dark clouds gathered we packed up and walked through the town, stopping at various shops (amongst others the RNLI store, where Miss M spent some of her pocket money and the sweet shop where they bought rock) and it *did* rain, but not enough to bother with our umbrella.
Finally we wound up in the tourist information again, since Impish Girl wanted some fudge she's seen there earlier, and we also got her a book about Whitby, since she'd decided that it would be the perfect subject for her project. (In Year 3 they have to do a project about a UK town, and she's been worrying what to choose.)
Not much more to tell really, except the second we got home I brewed a large pot of tea, because omg *so* necessary!
And that was our day! :) (Also, tomorrow is May Bank Holiday and I can have a lie-in! Yay!)
In other, extremely happy news, The Immortal's (sweet) Revenge has been nominated in the Rogue Poet Awards! (Best slash - they don't have a category for crack-tastic cross-overs. *g*) Thank you, thank you, thank you to the kind person who nominated me, I am utterly overwhelmed!

Gosh! Had you wandered into a tourist board advert. Actually for it to be truly English you should have been eating your fish and chips in the car whilst staring at the sea through a curtain of rain *g*.
Glad you all had such a nice day :)

Isn't a sat-nav (or "GPS" in american :) great? I didn't really see the point, until I had one. Love it!
And I envy the ice cream. That just sounds good!

It really was! :)

It's a talking map! We loves it! (Also, it caused great hilarity, because we were listening to the radio, and then heard this: "She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd - in 300 yeards, at the crossroads, turn right - lay ee odl-oo")
And I envy the ice cream. That just sounds good!
You do not have 99's across the pond? You poor deprived people!

No 99s! I'd never seen them before I watched Blackpool; which I did mostly for DT. Yes, I'm shallow. (I loved it though-- Mmmm) I thought the poor guy had dropped something on his cone!
I'm at work, and it's really slow. I brought my computer in and am playing with icons...

Hee! Ours wanted us to go up a TINY NARROW street yesterday, that the car would never in a million years fit through.

Shallow can be good!

Also we played a whole season of the BtVS RPG set in Whitby a few years ago - all of which, if you are ever bored, can be read on S2C's site!
(My first ever NC17, which I am still proud of, is called Whitby in Winter!!)

It really is a lovely place! And now we have plenty of pictures too. :)

See this is what I love about LJ! :D Will keep your recs in mind for when I'm stuck in bed with a horrid cold or similar - on a day-to-day basis I don't tend to have time for much boredom... *glances sadly at mile-long list of bookmarks*

Whitby is a lovely place, and ideal for a project, with so many layers of history - Caedmon and Hilda, whaling, vampires, etc. etc...
And yes, this sounded like an utterly English day out. I'm glad you all enjoyed it.

Well she's only 7, so it's limited how deep she'll dig. (Also, not terribly keen on school work... *g*)

I really needed it, esp since today is grey and rainy and DULL.

And congratulations on your fic nomination!

It really was! (Monday on the other hand was a drag, but... Sunday was bliss!)
I think I mention every five minutes or so that I was born in Whitby, but it really is t'best place in t'world. :)
Well I must have left the room every five minutes (or maybe I just have a bad memory), but I didn't know that! (I was born in Copenhagen btw.)
And congratulations on your fic nomination!
Thank you! :)
