Doctor Who ficlet: Not The Last. (1/6)
The postman didn't bring me 'Spike: Shadow Puppets 2' this morning. ::sulks:: So instead of Spike squee you get a little DW ficlet - one of those little bunnies that attacked me when I wasn't looking and refused to let go. Only 650 words. Un-beta'd.
Setting: AU-post 'Sound of Drums'.
Spoilers: S3.
Rating: PG.
Characters: Harry, Lucy, the Doctor.

Not The Last
It was Day 47 after the Fall of the Earth and nearly 10 o’clock. Lucy Saxon walked into the main room of the Valiant, feeling happy and well rested - sleeping in was wonderful, as was being able to take as long as she liked getting ready.
“Good morning darling!”
Her Master leapt down the stairs to greet her, but as he pulled her into an embrace he suddenly stiffened, staring at her like he’d never seen her before. Then he grabbed hold of her hand - hard enough for her to cry out in sudden pain - pushing her away.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
She looked back, hurt and confused. What was he talking about? She had done nothing to merit such fury.
“Tell you what? Harry... you’re hurting me. What is it?”
Letting go he took a step back, scrutinising her. She had never seen him look like that before.
“How could you not know?” Then a thought appeared to occur to him, and he shook his head. “Of course - you’re only human.”
Abruptly his face cracked open in a wide grin, and he proceeded to kiss her so thoroughly that she could barely stand.
“I’m going to be a daddy! Listen - can't you hear the pitter-patter of tiny feet?” He spun around, bursting with glee, before falling to his knees; resting his head against her belly, right hand spread out across her abdomen.
Slowly his eyes fell shut, the softest of smiles touching the corners of his mouth. A secret little smile, all new. “It’s a boy...”
Lucy could hardly breathe. She was pregnant? She hadn’t even known that he could make her pregnant... And he could tell? There were still three days until her period was due...
Her eyes fluttered across the room, touching upon the faces of Tish Jones and her mother - for once looking at her with shock and not hatred - before finally settling on the usually immobile countenance of the Doctor. He was staring at her - the exact same look on his face as had been on Harry’s.
Then the Master sprung up again, and, taking her hand, dragged her across the room.
“See Doctor? We are not the last!”
Time seemed to stand still as the Doctor’s eyes met the Master’s excited features. Lucy could not begin to guess what was going through his head.
Harry’s eyes seemed to glow. “Do you think he’ll be blonde like his mother? I remember - your eldest was blonde, wasn’t he?”
A wistful smile crossed his face. “And there was that time when he was... Ooh how old? 6? 7? When he tried to split an atom all by himself? Nearly blew a hole in the dome... It was the talk of the Citadel for months. What a boy! Always precocious that one - came out top of his year at the Academy as far as I recall.” He shook his head, smiling, and the Doctor closed his eyes, for the first time ever avoiding his gaze.
“Don’t. Please...” The usually stoic voice had been reduced to a whisper.
The Master tilted his head, musing. “What? No congratulations? No ‘thank you Master for renewing the race of Timelords’? Too hung up on the past and all those people who are gone - thanks to you?”
A moment, then he looked up, face determined. “I know what we need - a big celebration. A party. And to start things off, I think we shall burn... Hmmm, lets see..." He walked over to the see-through globe and spun it, finger raised. "Eeny, meeny, miny, mo... Japan! Perfect! That ought to impress upon my little kingdom below what a momentous occasion this is! Don’t you think so too, Doctor? A nice bonfire to announce the big news!”
He turned back to Lucy, bending down so his head was level with her stomach. “Just wait and see my boy - before long the universe itself will bow down before you!”
And, for the first time, Lucy Saxon felt genuinely terrified of her husband.

Hopefully, it'll arrive okay on Monday.

Oh I'm sure it is. *sigh* Stupid rain. (There's even a lot of rain in the latest chapter of the WIP... Spike does not approve!)

Have you read the DW/AtS crossover
no subject
Oooh thank you! :) I think The Master might be my favourite villain of all time.
Have you read the DW/AtS crossover shinodabear wrote for me?
Not yet! I saw it, but have saved it for later - a RL friend is coming tomorrow and staying for a few days, so I'm run off my feet... but it looked *wonderful*!

Squee! Thank you! :) I really should have worked on the writing itself more, since it is very sketchy, but I honestly don't have the time, so this had to do. And although there were other things I could have added, it just seemed right to be this short.
I felt the Doctor's pain.
I was reminded of an exchange in in 'Fear Her':
THE DOCTOR: It's scared! Come on, you were a kid once. Binary dot.
ROSE: Yes! And I know what kids can be like. Right little... terrors. [...] I've got cousins. Kids can't have it all their own way. That's part of being a family.
THE DOCTOR: What about trying to understand them?
ROSE: Easy for you to say. You don't have kids.
THE DOCTOR (off-handedly): I was a dad once.
*heart breaks*

The show truly excels at throwing lines like that out there. There was also this in 'Smith and Jones':
MARTHA: Well, that's weird, cause it looked like you. Have you got a brother?
THE DOCTOR: No, not any more. Just me.
*hugs the poor Doctor*
I never watched Who back in the old days, but I *did* know that he used to travel with his granddaughter, which raised many questions. I wonder if they'll ever follow it up.

Of course! Actually I'm panicking slightly at the thought of not being able to read it the second it arrives...
One post lorry driver stuck on the M5 had people knocking on his window asking if he had any HP & the DH books in the lorry that he could give them to read.
Hee! :)

Yay!

And of course, even if it really had happened, then in the end it didn't, you know?
no subject
Thank you! That's a wonderful description. :)
And of course, even if it really had happened, then in the end it didn't, you know?
As long as the baby was with them in the main room, then it did - everyone there stayed the same. Time reversed *around* them, but Jack was still filthy, the Jones's were still in their servants outfits, Lucy still in her red dress. So the baby would stay too. (And there will be more stories. The bunnies wouldn't let me be...)

So, does the Doctor choose not to reverse time in this 'verse, cause he's terrified he'll erase the kid's existance, or does the Last of the Time Lords play out, and then he steals the kid? Or none of the above?
no subject
Man, how can that be so happy and creepy at the same time? Well done.
Thank you - once I'd thought of it, it wouldn't leave me alone until I had written it. :)
Or none of the above?
Not saying - yet. But there will be more... am currently working on parts 2 and 3. There'll probably be 5 or 6 altogether. DW is SHINY! :D
(And you've got The Master moodtheme! I snagged it too, and one day will get round to using it. *loves The Master*)

Hello, other Elisabeth! I'm an American racial and ethnic mishmash, but my last name is very French, so my mom went with the Continental spelling. People ask if I speak French, but aside from that semester I took in college, no.
no subject
Which is a wonderful compliment, so I'm thrilled. :) And yes, I realised that I had to answer all sorts of questions too - it's too neat a situation not to play with further. Because what *does* happen at the end of 'Last of the Timelords'? Stay tuned!

Interesting. I'm Danish (hence the spelling), but my parents moved to the Faroe Islands when I was tiny, so that's where I grew up. Have now lived in England for a decade and like it very much. :)

PS, I also love your stuff generally and that meta you posted on the Time Lords recently was just brilliant. I really should have introduced myself before because I am a major Spike fan and have been checking out your journal intermittently for quite a while now.

Also a wonderful idea (and name!) for a comm. Have joined and will definitely post the fic when I have a moment - esp. since you said such nice things. :)
And thank you for reading my looong meta - this stuff just sort of happens and I have to post or I explode. Heh. And yes, I'm obviously also a major Spike fan... welcome to! (Sorry it's taken me so long to reply, but I've been away on holiday.)

The Master's reaction just felt surreal—suddenly so affectionate, and yet the mood swing was very much like him. And it was utterly dizzying that he already knew so much and Lucy hadn't even suspected anything at all—you really conveyed that, it was like she'd been knocked off her feet. I loved the way you handled the shift when the virtual bubble of Lucy's awareness—of only her husband and her—seemed to disappear and she started looking at her surroundings again, just when things started sinking in. The way you depicted the Joneses' reactions was quite fitting, and of course it led to the Doctor's—mirroring the Master's reaction, just wordlessly. The moment when the Master evoked the Doctor's children had me on the edge of my seat—fascinating, and yet it hurt so much. I winced when the Master noted cruelly that the Doctor dwelt on the past, and that it was his fault the people he loved were gone. It's like kicking a puppy.
It was incredibly fitting that the Master would burn Japan to celebrate his wife being pregnant o.O God, I love the way you depicted that. Flawless characterization. And the ending was chilling. I loved that this was the first time Lucy felt afraid of her husband—fits the way he welcomed her at the beginning too. She was still his precious pet at the time, their relationship wasn't at the point we saw in Last of the Time Lords.
Wonderful beginning—off to read more soon =)

Here we go— and it's cut in parts! Lovely, that'll be all the more convenient for my comments :)
I meant to mention that yesterday, but was clearly too tired...
I really liked the Master's very sharp, very sudden reactions, snapping from a merry welcome to ice-cold anger in a second, then back to glee, leaving Lucy utterly confused. That was so in character. And there was that feeling of Lucy being pushed and pulled around like a doll that fascinates me so much in the character.
Mmm, nailed the Lucy fascination. And the Master is quite like the Doctor - his mind is that much quicker... It's not that his reactions don't make sense, it's that everyone else doesn't keep up.

I could write the Master forever, seriously.

The way you depicted the Joneses' reactions was quite fitting, and of course it led to the Doctor's—mirroring the Master's reaction, just wordlessly.
It's this huge, momentous thing - and only the two Time Lords really understand what it means.
The moment when the Master evoked the Doctor's children had me on the edge of my seat—fascinating, and yet it hurt so much.
It's all too easy to forget that the Doctor had children... And the Master, of course, would remember. And use it to maximum pain.
I winced when the Master noted cruelly that the Doctor dwelt on the past, and that it was his fault the people he loved were gone. It's like kicking a puppy.
And Ten hurts so beautifully...

Canon handily supplied the burning of Japan - I just altered the reason. And oh, it fit so beautifully.
And the ending was chilling. I loved that this was the first time Lucy felt afraid of her husband—fits the way he welcomed her at the beginning too. She was still his precious pet at the time, their relationship wasn't at the point we saw in Last of the Time Lords.
This.

Yay =) I’m happy it made you happy! And happy late birthday to the little girl!

Time Lord thing. And our brains are human ;P

You should. XD

You are reading my Seeker 'verse, that enough is enough to make my month! (I love it to distraction, but not surprisingly people are wary of trying something so vast...) And my 'little' girl is no longer little, but 12 years old! (Photos here if you're curious. Nothing terribly recent though because I'm useless at updating.)
Time Lord thing. And our brains are human ;P
Indeed...

WIP's are just something special… Babies!
(I love it to distraction, but not surprisingly people are wary of trying something so vast...)
Haha, yeah, getting that. "Standalone" did it for me but it'll probably be a LONG while before I get 'round to the rest…
And my 'little' girl is no longer little, but 12 years old!
Indeed—gosh, she's only 7 years younger than I am.
Photos here if you're curious.
Some ANGELS you've got here! ♥ Seriously, they look like princesses. So adorable.

Wildly AU fics centred around OCs... ♥
Haha, yeah, getting that. "Standalone" did it for me but it'll probably be a LONG while before I get 'round to the rest…
Well most of the stories are pretty manageable. It's only 'Dating' that's so stupidly long.
Indeed—gosh, she's only 7 years younger than I am.
My eldest is 14... ('s OK, I'm used to feeling OLD now. And I'm only 36.)

My eldest is 14...
Yes, Mini M., I remember her :)
('s OK, I'm used to feeling OLD now. And I'm only 36.)
Tsk, it's all in your head. My mother is 54 and she's a real kid sometimes. ;P

Oh it doesn't bother me. Much. ;)

o.O Watch me run! XD
Ahem.
Yeah, ahem indeed.
Miss M. (Used to be Little Miss M...)
Sorry! Which one was mini-me? I tend to mistype words for others that sound vaguely similar anyway… :P Fail.
Oh it doesn't bother me. Much. ;)
*thumbs up* You're not ancient and forever yet.

Heee! As I have no actual way of forcing you, I shall have to count on your curiosity...
Sorry! Which one was mini-me? I tend to mistype words for others that sound vaguely similar anyway… :P Fail.
Oh she's definitely a mini-me. But I call her Miss M on LJ. :)

;) Well, for now, I'm pretty sure I'll be checking out Lucy's diary next. We'll see from there =P
Oh she's definitely a mini-me. But I call her Miss M on LJ. :)
*kicks memory cells* See that, goldfish. ^_^

Bless you. Although I must point out that Lucy's Diary follows canon - not that I didn't put a lot of that into 'my' Lucy, but her diary tackles everything from first meeting to his death. (Written long before he came back.)

(And I disliked parts of his return, so I don't mind that…)

And oh, EoT... I love it for the crack and just... ignore all the issues. :)

Oh god, yes. Broken little doll. ♥ Funny how the wives of the Time Lords were so different, and yet were both very much moulded into what they became, then broke free and… guns. Okay, not so different in some ways :D And I love them both to bits.
Haha, ignoring is the way to go. ;)

And the graphic really illustrates it perfectly. Those Time Lords and the things they ask of the wives...
The Martha fic centered more around this.

Well if you had the time, it would definitely be lovely! :D
Those Time Lords and the things they ask of the wives...
Marry a Time Lord, they said, he won't ask you to take care of the house and you'll have a wedding like nobody else has ever had…
