GIP and 'extra' canon.

Lookie what I got [livejournal.com profile] kathyh to make for me! Isn't it fabulous? Very sharable! :)

And if you're wondering where the text came from (it is quite possible that I'm the last person in fandom to find out about it, so pardon me if I'm just rehashing old stuff), then the lovely [livejournal.com profile] cayendi alerted me to the Captain's Blog on BBCA's Torchwood site. It's basically Jack's diary, written after every episode, and full of delightful gems and brilliant continuity. They're like tiny little canon FitBs, and they're wonderful. The text on the icon obviously comes from the entry post-'They Keep Killing Suzie'. It also has this bit, which just makes me grin a *lot*:

Other Staff issues: Ianto and I stayed back to go over the case files and reorganize the safe. Internal security cameras were temporarily shut down to run diagnostic tests, so there was no monitoring of the Hub for approximately four hours - but there were no security breaches to report. Everything went very smoothly.

(I don't need to cut for S1 stuff, do I? I think everyone's seen it by now, more or less...)

*

And then there's the BBC's site. I was nosing around there the other day, and clicked on the 'Play the Torchwood Mission' link and ended up looking at the KKBB entry... where I found Owen's report on the Himalayas!!!!!! I've been wondering for so long what happened, and there it was! I'm going to do a copy&paste job, because I think I *need* to have it in my LJ, because... well it is made of *pure* win. And it's hilarious.

MISSION REPORT #2008/043

Author: Harper, O

Nobody wanted to write this one up, but it looks like I drew the short straw.

Ianto picked up a call came early one morning and called us all in at about 5am. Something funny going on in the Himalayas. I said, perfectly reasonably I thought, you got me out of bed to tell me about what’s happening in China? Ianto said the incident was actually in Pakistan, but I said it’s neither here nor there, the Himalayas are just a bit outside our usual turf and how was this our problem exactly? UNIT should get onto this. Ianto said UNIT were already there and they’d asked for us. All four of us. According to them it was connected to Abaddon.

At that point the day got slightly worse.

Our experience would be valuable, apparently – regardless of the fact that we had no clue how to stop the thing before, Jack was the one who sorted that out and (a) it nearly killed him and (b) Jack disappeared after he came around. Regardless, we were told in no uncertain terms that we had to go. Orders from the highest authority, apparently. With Jack not around to grease palms, we couldn’t get out of it. So we went.

A mere three flights and a helicopter ride later, we were there. We were briefed on the way. They reckoned that they’d found another Rift, halfway up K2, and that it was linked to ours somehow. They’d tied in our report of the Abaddon incident to some strange goings-on there, and seen similarities. If it was true, we needed to liaise and study it (so more paperwork). They gave us the location and an experienced escort party and we set out to take a look. When I saw all the climbing gear I had flashback to Touching the Void and felt a bit ill, but it was just for emergencies – we took a chopper up most of the way, then it was about a half-hour’s walk up a shallow slope.

So we hit the spot, right in the middle of an unbroken stretch of snow, and Tosh set up all the equipment. Spent a couple of hours probing the area, checking for any weird energy… nothing. Then, suddenly, the ground began to shake and we all heard a noise which I can best describe as ‘SPROING!’ And this vaguely humanoid shape popped out of the snow. It was Jack… or rather, it was a sort of doll with Jack’s face. Quite a good likeness. It had popped out of the snow on a spring.

A Jack-in-the-box. How bleeding hilarious.

Then it exploded. And that’ll be what triggered the avalanche.

Fortunately it didn’t come our way: it started higher up the mountain, and we only caught the very edge of it. But it did partly bury the chopper, and we were stuck up there for a few hours until it could be dug out. Whilst they were doing that, Tosh dug up what was left of the Jack-in-the-box and took a look at it, and she says it was activated by her probing for Rift-type activity. So it was set up by someone who knew what we’d gone out there to do. There was no Rift. The whole thing was a set-up. Gwen tried to get some answers about who’d reported the activity, but suddenly nobody seemed to know anything. So we decided to head back home, although suddenly there wasn’t an available transport, so we spent two days waiting.

On our way back, they told us Harry Saxon had won the election, then he murdered the American President, then he was shot dead by his wife. A week really is a long time in politics.

How much do I love Owen? And how much do I miss the Master? This is just such a perfect, *perfect* Master-trick that I have been all giddy ever since I first found it. Thank you SO much to whoever wrote this. :)

*squee!*

I had looked through the BBC Torchwood extra bits, but missed both of these gems. Thank you!

That's cool, though I love even more Jack's blog about John. Especially:
Other activity: Captain John Hart for the purposes of this archive, we'll pretend that's his real name (separate file with full details to follow). He came through the Rift, still as sociopathic as ever. And tried to kill us all. But come on, check out those cheekbones.

Who hasn't thought that about those cheekbones?

Well here is another person who hadn't found the blog - so I shall go check it out later - thanks for the link.

And - yes, I still love Owen - he is great - sad what is happening at present - just hope that he doesn't get changed too much, if not by the experience, then by the writers!! And that last line of summary - great to shorten Dr Who into one sentance!!

That's it - any blog that talks about "those" cheekbones is worth looking at!!

Thanks for bringing this over! I think I saw the Himalayan report before, but I had completely forgotten it. The Jack-in-the-box is so completely the Master - I love it. Unfortunately, it doesn't answer how long Jack was gone. It really seems more like months than a week.

That was nice, but this is my favorite bit:

Upcoming issues: Need to requisition a new stopwatch. Old one damaged while moving a desk.

Well yes - we have to get our priorities right, after all!

No - no details coming from me about Owen. I yelled at the TV when he died - and I have seen that twice now ... especially after that really lovely scene with Tosh and the date ... I was so hopeful.

Yes, when is Dr Who returning - although I don't know how I feel about Catherine Tate ... but I was unsure of Freema to begin with. So - wait and see.

It'll be nice to have someone *not* in love with the Doctor as his companion! :) Hadn't thought about that!

As to being behind - I am one of those who watched Buffy 7 first - soo some of it made no sense ... and still haven't seen Angel!!

[identity profile] chloris67.livejournal.com 2008-02-26 06:02 pm (UTC)(link)
I know - that's a bit odd... although it is unclear *when* The Doctor decided to refuel - that could have been some time prior to the events at the end of S3. (Wibbly-wobbly-timey-wimey stuff, sigh. Doubt they'll ever clear that up.)

Ah, I've been looking at it backwards! It just made no sense for Jack to go wandering around on a sabbatical after LOTL. But he didn't; he made a beeline to Torchwood, exactly how I thought he would. There is really no reason for Martha-timeline and Jack-timeline to match up perfectly.

In M-timeline, they meet in Smith and Jones, the next day is Lazarus, and then a few days later they come back, right after the election. In J-timeline, the Doctor shows up at the end of End of Days, which is apparently a few months before Smith and Jones (no reason it couldn't be). Then the two timelines converge when Jack comes back with them, which is when Torchwood has their Himalayan adventure.

I am pleased to have this all straight in my head. This is now in my personal canon.:)

And now I understand the icon comment. I normally read LJ with animations off - I'm not fond things moving around on webpages. Very cute!

I hadn't seen that-- how perfect! ::snickers:: Jack in the box!

I miss the master too. But John Simm owns that part as far as I'm concerned (I know, I know-- noobie whovian here!) and so I've been wasting brain power trying to figure out how they can bring him back as John Simm. Of course I keep getting side-tracked by possible Life On Mars crossovers...

*blush* you're welcome :)

Love the icon.

I also like the
Other Staff issues: I’m in trouble with Ianto for duct-taping a CB aerial to the SUV. Apparently the tape made the wing mirror “disconcertingly sticky”. Still, nothing a bit of warm, soapy water can’t fix.
