'The Chain' (8.5) and HP7.

::taps modem:: Does this thing work? My internet has been unbelievably spotty these last few days - hence the lurking. If I'm v. lucky it'll let me post this...

I know I said I wouldn't go near S8 again, but I caved and read 'The Chain' since I'd always intened to. And... well it was nice. I liked it. I'd read the previews and the rest was pretty much just filling in all the gaps. Mostly, I think, it was a short-story illustration of 'What I do is too important to show the world'. And the ending (last panel) was wonderful. Just right. But I still can't think of a single thing to say about it.

Having pondered this (and read a couple of reviews), I think it's because the Buffy-verse has never done standalones. Ever. Every time the show focussed on an 'outsider' ('Amends', 'Superstar') or even went AU ('The Wish') it told us something about the main characters and moved everyone's story forward. The nearest equivalent I can think of is from Doctor Who with 'Love and Monsters' and 'Blink', where The Doctor was barely more than a guest character on his own show. So, I guess the story is a reflection on the essence of Slayerhood and heroism, done as a comic rather than written as an essay. Which makes sense. (The artist was OK I suppose - didn't take to his style particularly, it was a bit too boring - and I'm still fervently praying that Franco Urro will do 'Angel: After the Fall'. ETA: My prayers have been answered! Squee! Best news in a long, long time! *bounces*)

And Harry Potter... well I had planned to read it and then (with much glee) immerse myself in the wank. But I really, really liked the book. The best by far I think, and everything was very skillfully pulled off. And the ending (the last two sentences) was pure genius! So now I don't want to see people argue over it or anything like that. I'm not interested. I liked it, and that's enough.

Disabling comments since I doubt I'll have time/opportunity to answer. And also I'm trying to get a lot of writing done. 'Divided Destiny' (the sequel to 'Maybe Someday') is now just over 23000 words and going well (Have written maybe... 1/4? It's hard to estimate, sorry). I've still to start my [livejournal.com profile] seasonal_spuffy fic, but at least I know how it'll go. I'm also working on two (short-ish) DW fics and have some meta I'll try to get down at some point.

And the children's summer holidays just started. Yeah, I don't think I'm gonna get much done either... ::sigh::

On the upside I've spent this week watching (and recording) the last 5 episodes of S3 of Doctor Who (*showers BBC3 in flowers and kisses*), and I love my shiny new show oh so very much! Then last night Darcy and I watched 'The Gift' and oh I love my shiny old show too. (Spike! Buffy! Spuffiness! *flails*)
