Damn.

So, yesterday I linked to the cover for issue 7 of S8, because it featured a very handsome Giles. I was however v. tired and didn't actually read the summary. (Didn't realise that it was supposed to be Faith next to him either...)

As you probably know, I've been clinging to the Faith-arc, because there was no way Joss could mess *her* up, right?

Faith’s out to kill a Slayer.

Lady Genevieve Savidge is one of the most dangerous women on the planet. If she’s left unstopped, the British heiress will usher in the apocalypse. Faith has accepted Giles’s offer of an early retirement package for this gig — but the wetworks will have to wait till she’s infiltrated Savidge’s mystically protected estate.

THE HELL?? Unless that is some very clever misdirection (which is possible of course and is the one straw I'm clinging to), then I honestly don't know what happened to the character I love. Faith has a PROBLEM with killing people - there was this whole 'going evil and then seeking redemption' thing, right? But I could cope with that - just - if she was doing it 'for the common good'... rogue Slayers are dangerous, Faith knows that better than anyone. There could be interesting things done with that. But doing it 'for early retirement'???? What Faith would that be? The one who loved knitting and dreamt of having a house full of rug rats?

I am so baffled that... well I don't have the words. Maybe it's my cue to just walk away althogether. Sorry S8 lovers, but there's only so much I can put up with.

Maybe Joss got brainsucked by Glory?

*deep sigh*

At least Doctor Who has suddenly become awesome and brilliant and full of layers and themes and stuff, exploring all sorts of fascinating issues. *goes back to SHINY show and CANON Buffy*

ETA: Ok, so maybe it will be more like follows:

Giles: I need a Slayer dead. Faith, I trust you can do it, you have killed before. Also you already have a criminal record.
Faith: 'Scuse me?
Giles: I have prepared a generous retirement package for you, as a thank you for services rendered. If however you decide to decline, the police might just discover where you've been hiding out...

Or, you know, something along those lines. Stupid comics.

Hmm, I wouldn't make judgements until we see the real thing. And I wouldn't take this ad literally (but I admit that if it is literal and if all there's to this arc is to have fun with My Fair Faith, I'll be very disappointed).

But I hope it won't be that simple. I'm looking forward to Dark!Giles who retreated to the special ops Watcher M.O., because he definitely started on that path in B7 and continued even further in A5. Use of the word "wetworks" (remember - it was Watcher's term for their special ops) and the look of Giles on the cover suggests it for me.
Buffy's no longer looking up to him and for all we know their bond might never have been fully repaired after LMPTM. He might find Faith more vulnerable and lost, therefore more subject to manipulation. Just like Robin Wood did.
I know it was more to this and more geniune for Wood but I did see him manipulating Buffy in a pretty creepy way, and wasn't too convinced of his sudden sweetness towards Faith. I wonder - if he learns of Faith's bond with Angel, would he think her a whore too? Sorry, I know that some people can't stand Andrew - I can't stand Wood in about the same way, and the only thing which would make me to throw this arc away in disgust would be seeing Robin freaking Wood in there leaving happily with Faith and Faith getting this retirement package to start a happy family with him. BLEARGH! OK, I got it out of my system. :)

But what we can see is a variation of Faith coming of age, kind of Faith version of LMPTM/Checkpoint with some angsty consequences for Giles. And that I would love to see. Because Faith never really had that - she defied authority, but in a bad, immature way. Never in a grown-up way yet. She was humble and ready to listen to the elders after her ordeal, and Giles might find it too tempting to use it.

Also, I did recognize Faith on the cover, and I think it's great that she looks so different - she's supposed to. And I bet we wouldn't recognize Elisa Dushku either if she was made over like this. :)

Oops, supposed to be "living happily" and "Giles might find it too tempting not to use it".

Also, the more I think of it, the more likely it seems that we'll get a LMPTM-like twist. Parallels with Faith own story are too obvious: she was once the most dangerous woman in Sunnydale, and she had Council's wetworks after her to kill her. It took Buffy, Angel, Giles, and later Angel and Wes to pull her back from that brink and save her. Now she is put in exactly the same situation, but on the opposite side - now she is the wetworks. The angst and depth potential here is too big not to use it. Also they say that BVK is a great writer - I'm sure he set up this perfect mirror situation for a reason.
Also the name of the arc: "No future for you". Angsty, and may mean both Faith and her dark counterpart. But we'll see. I'm not jumping with excitement, but I'm looking forward for it with optimism.

Huh. I've never known anyone to dislike Wood quite so much, but that's certainly a valid viewpoint. Still, their babies would be *adorable*! ;)

*snerk* Sure, he can always donate to a sperm bank. Sorry again. ;)
What I don't like is not even his character - but a crappy resolution for him. It's how he was presented - "I'm hot and brave and well-dressed and educated, what a catch for a slayer!" Forgetting that "I'm also a psycho creep with a madonna-whore/victim complex size of a skyscraper, and I was raised as a Watcher to see slayers as tools to be used by the wise men like me - unless she's my mother whom I worship and hate at the same time. And any slayer should strive to live up to my mother, or else!". Let's take Faith, vulnerable and feeling low, and pair her with him - she should be so grateful!
They might make it still, but not in happily-ever-after way it was suggested (ugh). He needs to work through his issues first, at least start to recognize them. I don't know. It's like taking Gunn at the height of his W&H career, pair him up with a nice heroine and tell us - "what a catch - hot, smart and a great provider, they both are all set now", and expect us to eat it up, instead of "WTF?"
Whew. I wish it didn't bug me so - it spoiled that great fic about Angel and a puppy for me which everyone is reading. :( I hope something ate him in those 18 months, or if he's in the comics, he'd be shown for who he is. Hmm, actually, his teaming up with Giles to push Faith around, LMPTM-like, would be perfect.
