That comic thing...

OK, quick notes going through the thing for the second time. V. jumbled - I just want to get my own thoughts clear before going to read everyone else’s.

All the first pages we’ve already seen. Not much to say.

I rather like the elemental beings that Willow calls upon and that whole bit actually. Someone who can snap her fingers and make Osisis appear could certainly do what Willow does here. I like.

Warren and Amy are still lame. No further comments.

And it was Satsu who kissed Buffy [insert *giant* relief]. But how did Willow know? Anyway, this is fine, if somewhat silly. Makes sense though for one of the girls to crush on her.

The mirror thing is smart and ties in neatly with Amy’s mother issues. I like.

I *hate* Buffy clothes. (page 14 specifically) And I *hate* the way she’s drawn (page 12 specifically). Actually the art work continues to underwhelm quite significantly.

Um... fighting. Satsu has a teddy’s head on her shoulder (?). Oh and Buffy ‘goes home’... to Sunnydale/the Initiative. Who knows.

Buffy borrowing Willow’s power? Um... OK, so they did the unexplained telepathy thing is ‘Showtime’, but this is a tiny bit farfetched. Just sayin’.

Ethan! *sobs*

And then... it turns into X-Men! Wa-hey! (Joss better be going somewhere good! Will there be an evil Slayer faction, aiming for world domination? *g*) Although Buffy’s reaction is neat.

Aaaanyway - overall? Buffy got to kick some butt and be the hero rescuing her friend, have a face-off with the little bad and have the Big Bad go ‘Mwahahahah, you can’t stop us!’ etc. So.. yay?

Dunno, it all just falls a little flat... we get the whole Warren/Willow thing, which then has no impact on well - anything. Willow is fresh as a daisy (more or less). I liked TKiM better. *sighs* (Yes I know it’s not over yet. But I don’t care about it. I want it gone.)

I know next to nothing about X-Men, so even if Joss does borrow wholesale that won’t bother me. Just wish he’d have come up with something new different.

And Dawn is *still* a giant!

In *great* news [livejournal.com profile] tkp has updated ‘Man’s Best Friend’! Chapter 4a and Chapter 4b. *does the happy dance* So the question is... do I read issue 4 reviews before or after? I think before - I like to save up the best for last! :)

ETA: Finally read both parts and am just incoherent at the wonderfulness of this fic! (Definitely gen if you're wondering.) So simple, so gorgeously complex: Angel, Spike, Illyria, Nina, a puppy. Read. Marvel.

What do you mean Ethan! *sobs* ?!!!!!

[identity profile] frenchani.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 04:48 pm (UTC)(link)
I just want to know what happens to Ethan. I may read the comics some day but I am not that interested in them. So far I've just read issue 1 thanks to the Internet.

[identity profile] frenchani.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 05:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I figured it out from the comments.

But where was Giles? Does he know?

:-(

This is DEFINITELY not canon!

Ethan dies in the very last scene (third-to-last page). Buffy comes in just too late, beats up his killer; killer gives an exposition speech, the comic ends on Buffy's reaction to that speech. No time for any consequences.

Well, if the next issue shows a devasted Giles who's seeking oblivion in pure malt and coming out about his love for Ethan, I may forgive Joss...

Oh and Willow could be the one to whom Giles would confess his past...and that would get them close, and Willow could console Giles and resume the crush she used to have on him.

[identity profile] notarealverb.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 10:44 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh*
I don't think I'll bother buying them anymore. Looks like Spike:Asylum is better anyway. It might not be "canon" *coughmumble*, but at least it seems to have, you know, a point.
Out of curiosity, have you read Tales of the Slayers and " " Vampires? I've been thinking of getting them, and I'd like an idea of whether or not it would be worth it. :)

[identity profile] notarealverb.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 11:03 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly that would require having money
I knew I'd forgotten something...

Spike:Asylum it is then! At least I don't have to wait a month (or more) for each issue to come out. Maybe if S8 picks up later I'll catch up, but if this is as good as it gets then I'm afraid it's time to cut the crack before I get addicted. I never thought I'd say this, but I feel like Joss broke the deal.

I kept thinking that Joss wanted to do the same thing here that he did with Buffy and the shadowmen in "Get it Done". A "dream" scene where Willow goes back to the source of her powers and refuels - and judging from that grin she has when she's "rescued", she may have fueled up on more than just regenerating the alleged lobotomy. IMO, the only thing that can make the whole Warren thing justified is if we get some new sort of Dark Willow arc out of it... if she really IS peachy keen, then what was the point of any of it?

[identity profile] lusciousxander.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 11:07 am (UTC)(link)
I think it'll be cute if a slayer has a crush on Buffy. Buffy deserves being crushed on by her followers. And "I'll watcher your butt, lady" "Your grammar is not so much" banter between Buffy and Xander is adorable.

I think the Buffy drawing in the fighting scenes is good compared to how she was drawn in her scene with Dawn. But yeah, page 12 Buffy is awful, so is page 7 Xander (what's up with the large nose?)

I hate that Ethan is dead and that Warren is back and that Willow can heal herself and others. There are bits and pieces I love in the whole comic, I'm enjoying Buffy, Xander and the three slayers a lot.

I hope this doesn't sound geeky, but I loved when Buffy's eyes went black like Willow.... *blush*

[identity profile] powerofthebook.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 11:52 am (UTC)(link)
Eh. I think 'bored now' is a perfect summation of my reaction to this installment. A lot of flash and bang, and not a great deal of plot payoff, beyond the death of Ethan and the revelation that Satsu was the kisser.

There's no great psychological showdown between Warren and Willow, Willow walks up without a scratch after Warren was apparently lobatamizing and torturing her...in all, just meh.

Bring on Faith!

I'm not a comic person after all. I could hardly follow the panels of pp 7-11.

And I didn't recognise Buffy on page 10 and was all: who are those two? Why do we bother?

[identity profile] confusedkayt.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 02:59 pm (UTC)(link)
To be fair, I was quite happy with Xander in this issue. I could see how the Xander we saw here came from the Xan-man of yore. I wanna know when Willow found time to patch up a lot of badly broken relationships while she was out and about for months. And Willow - I guess she stole the Super mantle from Xander. I don't like her continuing on as 100 percent consequences free.

AT least this has caused me to realize that I am a character person. That's my reaction to all of this - a gut feeling on wha this character would/wouldn't do or wear in the situation. Good to know.

Did you notice that shadows in Ethan's cell were all wrong? Why a rectangular doorway creates a triangle of light on Ethan and then a circle of light on the general when Buffy slams him at the wall?

Could it be a hint that we see the illusion created by Ethan? Or it's just a very bad drawing?

*hope dies last*

Those are shadows cast by the second Sun of the S8 comics universe.

I have to say I don't mind Dawn staying a giant, especially since she would apparently be out of the story altogether otherwise (off to Berkeley)

[identity profile] spikendru.livejournal.com 2007-06-07 10:31 pm (UTC)(link)
And it was Satsu who kissed Buffy [insert *giant* relief]. But how did Willow know? Lesbidar?

I *hate* Buffy clothes. (page 14 specifically) And when did Buffy develop thunder-thighs? She was upset at how she was drawn in Hush - let's hope she never gets a look at these comics!

Ethanisnotdead. Ethanisnotdead. Season8isnotcanon. Ethanisnotdead.

Um, do you think there is any reason why Dawn is a giant? Or just because Joss thought it'd be cool?

[identity profile] stormwreath.livejournal.com 2007-06-08 12:49 pm (UTC)(link)
lesbidar?

Maybe she'd been taking lessons from Kennedy. Or maybe it's special Wiccan magical lesbidar. :)

But then again, as we know from 'Two To Go' and 'Showtime' Willow can read people's minds as long as they think real loud - so if Satsu's brain was broadcasting her naughty sweaty lusty feelings for Buffy, Willow would pick it up loud and clear as soon as she walked into the room...

Oh, yeah. I didn't think of that. That would be kind of rough on Willow though, especially if she's not currently in a relationship or her partner isn't around. (And if she's still with Kennedy, she obviously isn't around!) *g*

I've got a whole theory worked out about this. :)

When Willow stole the power from Giles in 'Grave', she suddenly became connected to everyone and everything. She was able to use telepathy before, as a magic spell, but now it became part of her. The Coven wasn't able to take it away from her afterwards, either - she tells Giles in the early part of S7 that she's still connected to everything; but I think what they did teach her was the mental discipline and mantras to shut out the worst of it, so she wouldn't go mad like Buffy nearly did in 'Earshot'.

So usually she's able to tune out the most distracting mental noise, and pay it as little attention as we do to birdsong or passing traffic outside the window - unless, as in 'Showtime', someone does the mental equivalent of jumping up and down shouting her name and waving.

Although, if Willow happens to have a hidden voyeuse kink... ;-)

[identity profile] spikendru.livejournal.com 2007-06-09 06:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, that's an excellent theory. I wonder if that was an unexpected side effect, or if the coven knew that would be the result of her taking the power from Giles?

Although, if Willow happens to have a hidden voyeuse kink... ;-)

Someone really needs to write that! *g*

[identity profile] spikendru.livejournal.com 2007-06-08 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought so, too. Particularly after "Potential". After that, Dawn started being a real help with the research, she seemed to "get" things that she hadn't previously, and if this takes place eighteen months after "Chosen", she's had even more time to grow up and become more mature. Having her still be whiney and self-centered and feeling ignored does not fit at all with the gains she made on the show. Why wouldn't they get along now?

*scratches head*

[identity profile] fangfaceandrea.livejournal.com 2007-06-08 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
so... umm here's a shocker for ya , I .liked this Isuee. Really liked it.

Ok so I still think the Willow/Warren/Amy crap is well.. crap. specialy Willow's eyes. Will someone please tell the inker that her eyes are green?!! And she's freaking smiling all the time. is creepy.

Other than that, there was some pretty artwork and small moments I really enjoyed. Like Buffy's face when she's chosing Satsu to go with her. she looks all slayer like. and Satsu's reflection on her blade.
or that final Page. i loved that one.

I don't know what it is, but those momets made me go yay! go Buffy! and be all emotional about it, and that outweights my logical reaction to the plotty parts of the story which aren't making much sense::cough:: warren ::cough:: I guess that they going x-men on the slayers as you put it, was expected, but this storyline is one I can't actually object to, and would like to see written by Joss.

There's still many things still find lame and ahve already een discussed by many but at least there was the so much needed BUFFY Dammit!!

And the Image of death Ethan did something to me.

*sigh*

But there's the... And the... What about the... Wha?
