So this summer we are renting a narrow boat and sailing along some canals. Which will be lovely and very relaxing. But this made me think of these videos from the Faroes, of the ferry Smyril in stormy weather (not the same storm, the videos are years apart):

In completely other news, Josh Johnson is currently hosting the Daily Show!!

And finally a fascinating article from The New Yorker:

The First World War, in Sharp Focus
An English chronicler of the trenches, and his wartime romance, captured in long-lost photographs.

Good lord. We have ferries between a couple of eastern Canadian provinces, and they keep breaking down and not running because of "bad weather" (which never used to happen when I was younger, she said dyspeptically) - I think the current ferry operators would faint dead away at those types of truly horrendous weather.

As for That Man, I'm waiting to see if Epstein will truly bury him, or if the bastard weasels his way out of something yet again.

you have to be tough

Oh yes - I think our particular part of the Atlantic isn't quite as tough as your part of the Atlantic, but it's no calm lake.

The interesting thing I discovered about Lake Michigan when I first moved here was that it is large enough that it has tides; too small to be noticed by most people, but definitely measurable. The largest of the Great Lakes, Superior, is as dangerous and unpredictable as an ocean, and is just as much a killer of sailors. *thinks about the Edmund Fitzgerald*

Those videos are amazing but I wouldn't want to be experiencing that live...

Great War article is behind a 'privacy' wall so I can't read it.

Is it the article I found 'A Hundred Years after the Armistice?'

That's the only New Yorker article that comes up about the Great War.

When I did a search the only Great War connected piece that came up was 'A Hundred Years after the Armistice' so, presumably, six years old and I couldn't read that either.

I one of those 'privacy' walls doesn't give me an option to decline cookies I do not get to read it; sometimes NYT pieces turn up on the Archive, but I'm unaware of any New Yorker ones that have.
