Holidays and fic

Hi all. Sorry about the radio silence, but we went on holiday. See below (actual photo, taken on my phone - yes it is that beautiful). ETA: Went on holiday 'back home' [the Faroes] for me, and are still here. It's been 4 years since we last visited, thanks to covid... (It's possible that we all caught it on the way as we're all various degrees of coughing/sniffly - a combination of airport + plane, or possibly just the small coughing child behind us on the plane - but we're mostly fine. It's probably just a cold.)

As holiday reading I brought with me The Goblin Emperor by Katherine Addison, as it was heartily recommended by kaffy_r. It proved delightful and very enjoyable. The world building is brilliant, the characters wonderful and complex, and although I found it nigh-on impossible to keep track of the names I loved it to pieces.

Finally, I managed to edit this short fic, with thanks to Owls for the sensitivity read-through and to kathyh for the beta. <3

Realised that I left out the most important part - that is, this is where I grew up. Well, not that village specifically (thank goodness, it's very very isolate), but it's 'coming home' and seeing everything again. :)

Yay for holidays! Boo for Covid (have you tested?).

Youngest Cee went on holiday to Portugal and they have armed police making sure you are wearing a mask everywhere!!

Yay for holidays indeed! And we have no tests and they're stupidly expensive to buy, so we're not overly bothered tbh. And if it is covid, we're lucky that it's just a bad cold this time round. (We all had it last summer and it was awful. This time it's a minor inconvenience - bit of a cough, bit of a sniffle.)

!!!! This is the Faroes - we have brought masks (and those of us who are sniffly have worn them if we're on a bus or whatever) but my mother is very dismissive: 'Only tourists wear masks!'

Someone on our tour asked if there was a language that was close to Icelandic, and he said the only one was Faroese...but that listening to someone from the Faroe Islands speak Faroese was like if a drunk Dane tried to speak Icelandic.

LOL! The languages line up a bit like this:

Old Norse - Icelandic - Faroese - 'Oldfashioned' Norwegian - Swedish - regular Norwegian - Danish

Danish is... very far removed from its Old Norse roots! Faroese & Icelandic are much closer. I can just about decipher Icelandic, but it's a bit weird. ;)
