I had a birthday...
Thank you to everyone for the birthday greetings! ♥ I think I responded to all of them, but if I missed one, poke me.
I had a lovely day, got some lovely presents, one of which was cinema tickets to see Dune. (Insert Squee!!) We went all three of us (thankfully the schools had an inset day on Friday) so Darcy, the Cherub & I all watched it in IMAX! Not cheap, and possibly TOO big and loud, although considering the sheer scope I am not sorry we went for the biggest option possible. I have loved Dune for years and years (stumbled across it in the library as a teenager) and have been very excited for this movie, since it finally looked like someone was going to do it justice.
At some point I will write up my thoughts, but Dune is so... complex and layered that it's difficult to know where to start. And I think I need to see it again before having any kind of actual thoughts.
~~
Anyway, have a couple of good things!

And on that note, this is... *chef's kiss* (some swearing initially, just fyi). But just - even the COLOURS!

and I'm honestly not sure how to even begin to discuss things. It's this mixture of 'OMG IT'S AMAZING!' and 'I ind it curious that they did not make this moment [from the book] the focal point of [inset scene], I wonder what the thinking behind that was...' I am SO watching with my Encyclopedic Book-knowledge at the forefront that I can't separate it all out. *g* I might have to watch it again to get a better feeling for what it's doing. (It's Quite A Lot like back when LotR came out.)

I haven't seen Dune yet, although I did just recently read the book, and I enjoyed it. I don't think I'll read any further than that, but I did like it.

The movie definitely does the book justice in sheer scope and size, although it does of course cut a lot of the more interior stuff.
I read the book years ago and feel in love. Read the 2nd one, didn't like it, and never read any further... 20+ years might of course change my opinion so I might have another go, but not yet. The first one is plenty on its own!

So Dune? Worth seeing in a theater? I'm thinking of dragging myself to it sometime next weekend. It will be the first movie or indoor outing since...hmmm, 2020. Not counting the Immersive Van Gough Experience or taking trains.

And yes - Dune is definitely worth seeing in a theatre. The sheer size & scope of it needs a proper big screen. And it was our first cinema outing since the start of covid too. :) I remember seeing the trailers and going 'I am seeing that in theatre, even if I have to wear a hazmat suit!' Hope you enjoy it if you manage to drag yourself out.

I keep forgetting about LJ reminders, so you're already doing better than me. ;) And yes, it was the best kind of birthday.

We all watched Dune on HBO, and enjoyed it. I have never managed to read it, but I was aware of it and its plot seeming forever. And now... I still don't want to read it, because there are too many books unread, but my son did grabbed forthe book immediately.

And v pleased that you enjoyed the movie! I know what you mean about too many unread books, but I'd make a plea for Dune, because it's so rich that it's like 5 books in one. ;) Hope your son enjoys it, there is SO MUCH that the movie didn't manage to cram in.

OMG that sounds amazing. Hope you enjoy it's so... *waves hands* VAST.
Also just realised that somehow I did not have my Dune icon uploaded on the LJ side! This has now been remedied.

Yes, it is, although it has spoiled me for watching films in mainstream cinemas, haha. On top of that, tickets are less than a tenner so you have change left over for a snack or a drink. \o/

And that sounds horrible! I'm gathering that you are not spending your time at uni to party/watch Countdown. Hope everything clams down for you soon.

And I agree with you SO HARD about Dune - I saw it on IMAX this past weekend and was blown away by the brilliance of it. We finally got a movie worthy of the book.

And I'm still not quite over how well they captured the sheer scope and size of the book. Everything just looked right, and the casting was amazingly on point! :D *Dune fistbump*

Dune was a bit of a mix experience for me, it is grand, but I miss somethings from the books. I am nearing the end of book one now, I hope to finsih this weekend.

And as a longtime book-fan, with a basically encyclopedic knowledge, my viewing experience was a continual 'Oh they have cut that, oh they have changed that, oh this is exactly the same, hurrah!, oh this is new...'
I am still pondering how to separate it all out in my head, and am not sure I will ever be able to judge the film entirely on its own merits. Mostly though, I am happy that it looks right, and that the casting is perfect and that the story line is basically there.
