When I saw his name trending on Reddit, my first thought was "oh no, did he die?" Because I never would have guessed this. This might be my favourite comment. :D
Not sure yet what I think about it... On one hand, at least it won't be boring. On the other, this feels uncomfortably like an olive branch to the people who bashed Whitaker and Capaldi :/ Well it's VERY much the safe choice. However I don't think the NotMyDoctor crowd will be happy either. It seems everyone has caught collective amnesia of how much he was hated back in the day.

Oh, they're definitely celebrating, at least on Reddit :/ All we can do is hope that RTD will ruin all their dreams by putting women and POC and LGBT folks everywhere :D
It seems everyone has caught collective amnesia of how much he was hated back in the day. Yeah, it's so weird that there's this general consensus that RTD era was perfect. Funnily, of all the fannish spaces where I hang out these days, my f-list of DW has been most suspicious about his return :D

Yeah, it's so weird that there's this general consensus that RTD era was perfect. Funnily, of all the fannish spaces where I hang out these days, my f-list of DW has been most suspicious about his return :D It's been interesting to follow the way things have changed. Back in 2010 everyone hated him (he even writes about it in The Writers Tale - he'll occasionally ask his partner what they are saying about him in fannish spaces, and the reply would always be 'Oh they hate everything' which would make him laugh) - I sometimes felt like there were only me and two other people who tried to appreciate what he did. Moffat was, of course, The Second Coming, and everything would be PERFECT when he took over. Then it has steadily turned around and now the RTD era is viewed with deep nostalgia.
I think the issue is that today's fans are the ones who were 8 years old in 2005 and that era is bound up in happy childhood memories. Like, my 22 year old is suddenly interested again, and hopes that Eccleston will be back. (Unlikely, I told her.)
Mostly I am DEEPLY CURIOUS to see what happens now.
hopes that Eccleston will be back. (Unlikely, I told her.) That's another weird part of the RTD amnesia that I've been seeing. There are so many people saying how this might mean that Eccleston will also be back, completely forgetting (not not being aware of) that a lot of Eccleston's grievances (justified or not) were specifically against RTD himself.
