So you hadn't actually seen *any* classic Who? I am Scandinavian - I hadn't even HEARD of the show before I came to the UK (in 1996). Then I absorbed a few things via cultural osmosis (TARDIS - bigger on the inside, The Doctor - curly hair & scarf, and Daleks - manic killers). And that's basically all I knew when the show returned in '05. However I was aware that it was a cultural institution and that it was made for families (and to make children hide behind the sofa) so I dutifully made the whole family sit down & watch. Creating fangirls out of my daughters in the process, although they have long since moved on to other pastures.
I guess that would be very different to someone like me who grew up watching it - I remember from bits of Four and Romana I (Key to Time) onwards, though I tailed off during Seven as I found his era boring. Seven's first season was more miss than hit, but everything else I love! Some of my favourite stories, hands down!
I guess becuase he makes more sense in hindsight, once you've got the whole picture to piece everything together. RTD is far less subtle, but he seemed to hit me in all the right places, at the time. :-) Fair nuff. I like to piece things together. Good that we can all find something to enjoy.
It will definitely be interesting to see what you make of RTD with that new insight! We have been rewatching the show (from S1 onwards, extremely slowly) and it's un to catch references.
