Play It Again, Sam Part 1
Since my cold has turned into 'My Cold' and killed any noticeable brain-activity, instead of writing something deep and meaningful, I'll start posting my fic!
Now how to explain... I'll start by saying that I never really wanted to write this - I was merely curious as to what would happen if Riley (and Sam) turned up in LA during AtS s5, but every story I could find was slash (which, as it happens, is just not my cup of tea) (although I love that Angel and Spike once...). Anyway, after a while, a particular scenario kept popping up in my head. Then dialogue came along, and then more story. So I started to write it down. And it just grew and grew - honestly, this thing just wrote itself (some things needed editing five million times, to get them just right, but I always knew how it was supposed to go). And interestingly enough, the story turned out not to be about Riley at all - but to find out what I mean by that, you'll have to read it. There's 10 parts and an epilogue, and I'll post a part every other day or so. (ETA: Try every week or so).
In a nutshell, I think I can safely say that if you didn't like 'As You Were', you should love this! If you like, please rec it.

DISCLAIMER: Of course they’re all owned by Joss Whedon and ME. They just came and set up camp in my head and insisted that I write this story. If it’s no good... it’s only words.
SETTING: Late AtS s5 (between ‘The Girl In Question’ and ‘Power Play’). Fits in around canon. Sort of a ‘missing episode’.
PAIRINGS: Sam/Riley, Angel/Nina. S/B in spirit.
RATING: PG-13? Some bad language.
DISTRIBUTION: Ask and I’ll give it to you with chocolate sprinkles on top!
THANK YOU’S: To
the_royal_anna for being generally wonderful and supportive and for all the excellent feedback, and to my husband for liking the story, even though he dislikes fanfiction on principle.
FEEDBACK: Please, please, please? (But try to be gentle - this is my first fic.)
ETA: Total word count: 16000 words approx.

Part 1
They were surrounded.
Riley Finn cursed silently. Where had they all come from? Tracking three strange blue-skinned HST’s with pincers for hands and poisonous teeth all the way from Colombia had not been a picnic, but his Commander had assured him that there was a very good, but classified, reason. And since his mission was observation only, he had a small handpicked team consisting of himself, Sam and 4 others. Which was why the sudden appearance of about 200 of the blue demons was a very nasty shock.
‘I guess I won’t be retiring to Iowa with Sam on my army pension,’ he thought bitterly, wishing that just this once she had stayed behind. But no, here they were on the outskirts of LA on a moonless night, and with no backup available.
As the circle tightened and the soldiers readied their weapons, Riley turned to Sam for one last look.
“I love you,” he whispered.
“I love you too,” she replied.
He saw fear in her eyes. But also determination. If they were to die, they would take as many with them as possible.
The largest demon took a step towards him.
Suddenly there was a commotion at the edge of the circle. Glancing sideways Riley couldn’t see what was happening, and turned back to the HST, finger already pulling at the trigger. There was a flash of metal, and then the demon’s head was at his feet. As the body fell down Riley looked up in shock to find two mocking blue eyes looking at him.
“Young Master Finn. Pray, do tell me - how have you been?”
Unable to utter a single word, Riley stared at the vampire in front of him. Same hair, same eyes, same coat and a very large sword in his hands. And... something else, something other than the usual swagger - something different that he couldn’t put his finger on.
Obviously tired of waiting for an answer, Spike turned around and ran another demon through. Riley looked up to see what looked like a SWAT-team appearing out of nowhere. The black clad strangers started to quickly and efficiently fight the demons and within seconds chaos reigned. Finding Spike at his side, deftly parting another head from its body, Riley found his voice again.
“Spike, how...”.
Two demons lunged at them. Spike kicked one while he effortlessly cut the other one in half. Swerving around, blood-drenched sword shining, eyes glittering with the joy of battle, he gracefully split the other one open. He called over his shoulder.
"No time for chattin' Crew-cut! Usin' the gun would be helpful though!" And then Spike was gone again.
When the fighting slowed down, Riley looked around for Sam. They usually fought side by side, but they’d become separated when three demons attacked at once. And in the darkness it had been hard to see where she’d gone. They were in an empty space between blacked out warehouses, the only light source being the streetlights in the distance. The black clad soldier-types were everywhere, rounding up the last demons, finishing off still twitching bodies, others helping injured team members. The scene had an eerie feel to it, like something out of a futuristic movie where mankind was struggling against evil aliens.
Trying to clear his thoughts, he considered what to do now. He was unable to report to his superior, since a demon had broken his communication equipment... hearing Sam's laughter, he turned to find her walking towards him chatting with - Spike!
Sam was feeling elated. “Where did you learn how to do that, it was awesome! If there’s time you will have to show me!”
The strikingly good-looking englishman smiled at her.
“Sure thing, pet, presuming you know the basics of sword fighting - do they teach that in the army anymore?”
Sam chuckled. “Well, in the demon fighting-branch - Riley! Are you OK?”
She ran to him and gave him a quick hug and looked him over. “Spike here saved my life - did the most amazing thing with his sword, I was just asking him if he could teach me...”
Riley looked at her with an oddly closed look on his face and said, “I know him, Sam! Far too well.”
Turning to Spike, and instinctively readying the gun, he said, “Just tell me what the hell is going on - Spike!”
Casually swinging the sword onto his shoulder, the blonde vampire looked at him coldly. “Considering I just saved your wife’s life, it wouldn’t hurt to be civil, Riley. As for what I’m doing - what does it look like? I -”
One of the black clad men came up to them. “Sorry to interrupt Sir, but we have thirteen wounded and seven poisoned - including one of the army-soldiers.”
Spike turned to him. “When will the medics be here?”
“In less than two minutes. Do you want me to call the boss?”
Spike considered this, and shook his head. “No, I’ll call Angel. You did find the magic trinket, I presume?”
“Mr. Wyndham-Pryce is taking care of it now.”
The vampire nodded. “Good. You can go.”
With a “Scuse me for a moment” to the couple, Spike pulled out a cell phone and quickly dialled up. After a few moments he got a reply.
“Angel - it’s Spike. ... Yes, all taken care of... Wesley’s on it... got some uninvited guests though... oh no, regular soldiers, no civilians - I don’t suppose you’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting a certain Riley Finn?... Really?... oh, you were interrupted - what a shame, maybe now we can make up for lost time!”
Spike flashed Riley a predatory grin, and the soldier suddenly remembered that Buffy had chosen to remove the chip.
On to Part 2
Now I have a whole house to tidy (it is the circle of life... I was incredibly messy as a child, and now I'm very tidy and have extremely messy children!). :)

Boy can I relate! :)
I should think so, with 4 children - I am seriously in awe of you!
