Look I exist!
Happy Birthday to me. :)
I have taken the day off work and have very few plans - well, except for posting stuff.
First of all, some sort of actual update...
So, nothing terribly exciting has actually happened, but here's where life's at.
- the youngest (now 14!!) is perfectly happy. She's taking triple science for her GCSEs and spends most of her time practicing her violin (will be doing her Grade 5 at around Christmas time).
- the middle one (18) we deposited at uni (i.e. drama school) some weeks ago and she loves it. To the point of being difficult to get hold of because she is always busy with classes or her new friends. Which is of course wonderful, and exactly what university is supposed to be about. She even seems to be coping with looking after herself (cooking, shopping, budgeting), at least so far.
- the eldest (20) is 6 weeks in her Art Foundation course (a one year course going through ~everything~, like printing, textiles, painting etc etc), and although there is only teaching 3 days a week usually goes in every [week]day to work. It's great to see her so engaged and focussed.
I have nothing interesting to tell about myself, although I got a new phone for my birthday, which is fab, since I have been using one of my daughters' old ones for... years. (I have also asked for the Good Omens dvds, but they don't come out until the 28th.)
BUFFY. Well it took us about a year to finish S3. I blame a lack of Spike, as the girls were missing him muchly.
However, here is a selection of opinions on S3 (that I can remember):
- They love Cordelia and Oz. (Oz is the coolest, obviously, and Cordelia is, well, Cordelia.)
- They found B/A generally cringe-worthy (although on that note, they very much appreciated the scene in The Zeppo), but liked Angel well enough as a character, easily seeing that he's just a big idiot.
- Everyone loves the Mayor, so that barely needs mentioning.
- They were so-so on Faith, partly due to knowing all the beats of that kind of character-arc by heart.
- They found the Xander/Willow ~thing~ basically unwatchable.
- And they declared Earshot THE BEST EPISODE EVER. (Which was gratifying. *g*)
We have now started S4 - watched the first four eps before middle one went off to uni, partly as preparation, so she would know that it would be OK to feel overwhelmed, what to look out for in case her flatmates might be demons (they're not, they are apparently too lovely for words), and... well, she's way too smart to make a mistake like Parker (besides which, she already has a girlfriend). That was actually quite fun, because once it became clear just what a douche he was, both of the girls just went 'Oh, he's a nice guy'. Yessssss. /proud mother, I have smart children
Once middle one was off to uni we carried on watching, and - Wild at Heart apart - S4 is just so much fun. I had forgotten how entertaining The Initiative is, and then there was Pangs (youngest especially loved 'A bear! You made a bear!'), and tonight we shall be having Something Blue. <3 <3 <3
Funnily enough Riley doesn't bother me at all. Of course, I am watching through my meta glasses, and it's fascinating to see how neatly paralleled Spike & Riley are. Angel has left, and who is to claim Buffy's heart... Is it the Nice, dull, straight-laced lil Iowa army boy - or the wildcard, the one she never has to pretend towards? I love them soooooo much.
Sidebar: For those that want Buffy fic, I have just started posting My Immortal to AO3, so if you want Buffy/Capt-Jack-is-the-Immortal that fits with ALLLLL the canon, now's your chance to jump on board. :) (One chapter per week.)
~
As well as Buffy, we are also watching Avatar: The Last Airbender. The girls watched it all some years ago when it was on Netflix and I caught enough episodes to really like it and know most of the characters, but never saw the ending (and have remained unspoiled!). But the youngest decided to buy the dvds with her birthday money, and we have been enjoying it immensely. It really is truly great storytelling - engaging characters, well-plotted, funny and touching and... *waves hands* Just great.
And as will surprise exactly no one, I am (still) complete Zuko trash.
~
There may have been more, but I can't remember.
I'll be back with Doctor Who fic, and a Good Omens guide (well, if I can get it knocked into shape). <3
