Birthday day
So, today is Miss M's 18th birthday.
(Yes, I know.)
We've had a lovely day, she got a new phone (very shiny etc, she was very pleased), although her favourite presents were Satre's Being and Nothingness: An Essay on Phenomenological Ontology and Political Thinkers: From Socrates to the Present.
Have I mentioned that she wants to study philosophy (preferably at Cambridge)?
Anyway, we went to York for the day and wandered about and had chip butties for lunch and mourned the fact that Christmas Angels is gone (it was the BEST SHOP).
But overall, very nice.
Went home, had some quick pizzas and then had the family descend (family includes a 3 year old, two 4 year olds and a 7 year old, so it was... lively). Had cake etc and are now relaxing.
I should probably do some sort of reflection, but - she's just a good girl. We're lucky. Or maybe being fairly relaxed and trusting that the kids are alright works out well when it comes to parenting. Couldn't be more proud, of course.

Hah, that's a good thing then given her preferences! Congrats to all of you.

Oh - how very sad.
Or maybe being fairly relaxed and trusting that the kids are alright works out well when it comes to parenting.
I think there is a lot to be said for that - worked for us, too.

There is now a MASSIVE German Christmas shop on Stonegate. But it's not the same. :( :( :(

Sad to hear Christmas Angels closed down, seems the city council doesn't want independent retailers any more, just restaurants and bars?!

And yes, that was the impression I got from reading up on it. :(

Thy humble phantom lurker
(Anonymous) 2016-11-20 12:53 am (UTC)(link)And oh my god, this made me feel so young. And I don't mean in a philosophical, positive, touching way while I'm having a midlife crisis. I'm literally just three years older than your daughter. Hell, if you saw some of my relatively-young-character cosplays, you'd say I was younger. And yet, here I am for a year and a half bombarding you with meta, philosophical insights, Watsonian analyses, and essays. I feel like I should be respectfully raising my hand like at school.
Sorry, it's just so weird for me to know someone who has a *kids*, let alone kids almost my age :)

LOL. But I always come back to this quote from Lost in Translation:
Bob: It gets a whole lot more complicated when you have kids. [...] Your life, as you know it... is gone. Never to return. But they learn how to walk, and they learn how to talk... and you want to be with them. And they turn out to be the most delightful people you will ever meet in your life.
This is very true. The girls are 18, 15 and 11. And the two older ones are definitely delightful & interesting & worth spending time with and talking to. We have very animated dinner table discussions about politics or philosophy or art or whatever happens to be interesting us at the time. (We are *such* bohemians in that sense.) So don't worry about it. ;)

luckweaver is about your age, and I've known her for years. Don't sweat it. (Imagine how old *I* feel... /o\)
Oh, I didn’t mean to make *you* feel old! It’s just…I felt weirdly young. I mean, when you just type what you want to say and always only see a screen, you sometimes get this strange impression that *everyone* on the internet is the same age as you are!

Oh we are! :)

Yes, I think we all do that. But then we are, mostly, meeting because of shared interests, and thus age often matters little.
