The Reproaches
This is one of my favourite pieces of music, and I look forward to it every year.

Rehearsal video of a version of the Good Friday Reproaches (No251 in the Laudate Hymnal).
This was recorded as part of my practice after mass so the microphone is off. I just like the sound of the church to practice in.

Double holiday
(Anonymous) 2016-03-25 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)For a Greek like me, the 25th of March is both a religious and a national holiday: The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates the Annunciation (and this is standard; you know, Easter is always moving about and we mark it with the Julian Calendar -I think- so we usually celebrate it later), and it is also one of our two National Days, commemorating the beginning of the Greek War of Independence. They are kind of connected but since it's not like, CHRISTMAS or something, the religious part is a bit overshadowed because there are parades and the like all over the place, so good luck going to church.
(Not that we would go anyway. My family belongs to that weird category, where we are perfectly and honestly religious, and we learnt our prayers when we were 4, and we discuss theology, and we have half a church of religious icons, and my mother somehow remembers when EVERYBODY's Name Day is, but somehow, we manage to actually attend a service about 4-5 times a year. I mean, my younger sister had quite logically wondered when she was little "Why is it always Easter and they bring out all the candles, and they ring the bells, and everyone is chanting etc every time we go to church?" :))
So it's a real shame that this year I have no classes on Friday: the day was free for me anyway. Oh, well :)
Re: Double holiday
There are lots of versions on youtube, but this is the one we use in our church and this seems to be the ONLY recording there is. I was so pleased to find it! :)
But I have to say, it's such a strange experience for me to listen to a religious hymn and to immediately understand everything like I'm talking to someone, and not having to mentally translate half the words to get the meaning!
That is the upside of an universal church... :)

Interesting. I did not know that.

Heh. I think that is fairly normal... (That said, we go every week. Good Cath'lics, us.)
