I never knew this...

Before Hillary Clinton, there was Shirley Chisholm

Decades before Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton, there was Shirley Chisholm. As the first black woman to run for president for a major political party she was years ahead of her time. So why don't more people know about her?

"I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men," she once said.

That doesn't surprise me. I do remember Shirley and suspect that a lot of the reason why she was forgotten was that she never got as much media attention at the time as she deserved. Even today one can see how the media dismisses, right from the start, candidates they think have no chance of winning. The early coverage of Sanders' candidacy was downright insulting. It wasn't until he started making public appearances and drawing big crowds that they had to backtrack a bit, though they still focused more on his appearance than his politics.

This part though, I didn't know:

Shirley Chisholm survived several assassination attempts

I was pretty young at the time of her campaign

Has he retired completely? I knew he was going to stop being an independent blogger but I assumed he was going to do some less demanding work.

Possibly, yes. Sanders has acknowledged there's a big push to make Elizabeth Warren his running mate. I do think she might be doing equally well but it's hard to say. The key time is when the ballot box is open -- will that enthusiasm translate to votes?

I look forward to your post!

Although my memories of her campaign are non-existent, she was still in government until I'd graduated high school. Although there were assassination attempts against presidents later, it seems like the mid 60s to 70s were a big time for that here against political figures and reformers. Given she had three strikes against her I suppose it would almost be more surprising if none had occurred.

Years ago, I went to my cousin's college graduation and Shirley Chisholm with the guest speaker. She so impressed me that when she ran for President I voted for her although I knew she'd never win.

It was sooo much better than my guest speaker (Clifford Wharton) who almost put me into a coma.

I've heard about Shirley Chisholm, and she sounds like she was ahead of her time, especially in those days. She was quite remarkable.

I recently heard about Shirley Chisholm from a local news program. I wish it had made more coverage. I did Modern history in high school and the main topics were about the Israeli-Palestinian Peace Process or the JFK Assassination.

If Aboriginal history was taught in Australian schools on a wider scale, maybe there would be less racism and ignorance of Indigenous culture and diversity. I'm only aware of some historical events because I'm curious to understand why there is still an issue. It's mainly left up to the government to make up for the past.

I'm left to believe that some people just want to stay arrogant. They feel threatened by immigrants that come here legally. Yet they don't think about how this country was colonized partly by convicts who were guilty of petty crimes from the British government.

There is always a debate every year during Australia Day, whether it is really Invasion Day. Those who are open-minded, tend to say its a bit of both.

Adam Hills acknowledged his convict roots and his able to be open minded on topics like this.

Me too!. I have been a fan of his since he was just a relatively unknown Australian stand-up comedian. Before he started swearing on "The Last Leg".:D

I make a big deal about the swearing because Adam was known as the "nicest" stand-up comedian. But I guess you can't do a "rant" like he does without getting passionate about it.

Sorry I have strayed away from the original topic. I always do that.:)

"... being passionate often involves swearing"

Yes. Like in sport or in another activity that two people can share....:D

I had to go there.:D

Tennis use to be known as the "Gentlemen's Club" and look at what's happened?. I know they must be under pressure to "perform" but sometimes I think they can get carried away.

Now how do I go back to the original topic?. Maybe I'll just stop now?.:(

That's okay. Whenever your ready. I figured that if I forget something than I'll probably mentioned it in another post. You know how my conversations tend to go.:)

Boy, this brought back memories. Yes, I definitely know about Shirley Chisholm. My sixth grade teacher, Miss Hartwell, who was also my first black teacher, left our school because she was going to work with Shirley Chisholm. I didn't know at the time that she was going to work on the campaign, which was announced a few weeks after Miss Hartwell left.

What I remember so powerfully, though, was that I thought it amazing and wonderful that a woman was running for president, that a woman was willing to say, "I can" when the men were saying, "You can't." She's also the only presidential candidate I ever met because the campaign did do a visit to our city and Miss Hartwell made certain my parents and I were invited to an event. We were introduced and I wished her luck, told her I thought it would be amazing if she won and she thanked me. It was nothing special, but my former teacher had wanted some of her students to have the chance to meeting this inspiring woman.

She and Barbara Jordan were childhood idols for me because these were women who did when the conventional wisdom was that women should be the support and ornament for the man.

I had never heard of this woman! I feel slightly ashamed.

She probably wouldn't feature much in the UK education system so I'll blame the media.
