THIS IS SO TRUE!

Came across this by accident:

15 Weird Things Found In Every British Household

Although I'm not sure about 'weird' [or the 'British], it's just... stuff that we have in our house.

I have 14 out of the 15 items (no Argo catalogue) I must live in a British household. ~_^

Wow :333

[identity profile] rustydragonfly.livejournal.com 2015-10-15 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm disturbed by how many of those are true. I thought that was just junk everyone had!

[identity profile] fenchurche.livejournal.com 2015-10-15 07:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are mostly all true of American households too! Certainly in mine.

The only reason #7 doesn't apply is because when we moved a few years ago, we went through all of our containers and lids and if we couldn't find matches, we got rid of them. It might be about time to go through things again, but I think we've stayed on top of it pretty well.

As for #8, we don't have an old Argos catalogues, but we do have several old Sears catalogues!

And with #14, I only have a few old European coins... mostly ones my dad would get from folks at work (he was in the Air Force) when I was a kid because he knew I liked foreign coins. I also still have a one pound note he got from someone when I was in high school.

Err, okay. Yes, guilty - if not currently, then previously. In the past few years we've actually become really good at doing regular (i.e 2-5 yearly) audits so the out-of-date medicines and ancient paint isn't as old as it used to be ;)

...and definitely no Argos catalogue. Screwfix, possibly, propping something up in the shed somewhere... I suspect it's the catalogue bit that counts.

I've only got six out of 15 but then this is my first place that I've owned so where would I get all those keys?

As others have said, how is most of this even particularly British? I'm American, I don't have an Argos catalog, and the only reason I don't have a pile of defunct European coins is that I'm not into grabbing handfuls from the "junk" bin at the local coin shop like when I was a kid, so they've been gotten rid of somewhere along the line (I guess maybe they weren't all defunct at the time, since we're talking about the 80s here). All the rest of it we have. Bzuh?

[identity profile] geekslave.livejournal.com 2015-10-15 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Like others have mentioned most of these don't seem strictly British, except for Argo and European coins. A lot of this stuff is true of my house, or of places I've lived in before. Like we have the bags within bags here (though it's just for us to collect them so we can take them to be recycled later.) Mike and I have a ton of old tapes, but we also have a VCR.

How else would a person live?

OMG. I have a full set... (except the batteries and keys have a drawer not a box...)

How very depressing.

[personal profile] kikimay 2015-10-15 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm an Italian and still have many of those! (Actually it's a nice idea to keep the batteries in one place. Thanks!)

And the shopping bags too cute to throw away! Doesn't everybody else keep those?

Well, exactly. Except that we do still have a VHS player. Never use it, but it's there...

Other than a couple of things, we have all of those things in our house. I don't think it's just a British thing.

[identity profile] urb-banal.livejournal.com 2015-10-16 11:17 am (UTC)(link)
I also have a Sega Genesis but I can't get rid of it until I find out which kid left it here and if they are going to tell me the day after I get rid of it that they could have sold it on-line for BIG BUCKS.

The paint will get used. You just wait and see. Those keys? Hey, they open something somewhere, it might be at the bottom of a landfill but Dr. Who will need it.

[identity profile] a-phoenixdragon.livejournal.com 2015-10-16 07:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee!! My household has most of these...or has at one point in time and we never thought about it, lol!!

Though I do get uses out of those pretty bags that are too pretty to throw away and the plastic bags I keep stuffed in one plastic bag. *Grins*

Think it is a left over of the Depression Era mentality: Nothing should be thrown away because everything is useful.

*CACKLES*

Alas...no Argos mags for us. That is JC Penney, Sears and Roebuck catalogues and Time magazines.

Same here, for everything except the European coins and Argos catalogs. But I have/ have had catalogs for every online retailer in the USA. So, 14/15, pretty much. The list did make me wonder why Americans put paint in cans, while Brits put theirs in tins, and why the "ue" got dropped off "catalogue" on this side of the pond. Too far from France? ;)

I can confirm this list is true for Dutch households too. Except for the Argos catalogue, but we have plenty of other ones.

[identity profile] avrelia.livejournal.com 2015-10-19 02:22 pm (UTC)(link)
not only British, definitely. Except for Argos catalog, I suppose.

[identity profile] eaweek.livejournal.com 2015-10-30 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL at your icon!

Yes, tins and cans are the same thing... actually, years ago, we used to call them "tin cans," but somehow that got shortened to just "cans." I don't think they're made out of actual tin any more. Circular, metal, with a lid--exactly.

AFAIK, it was Daniel Webster who wrote the first "American" dictionary and decided US English didn't need the letter "u" and various French flourishes. Come to think of it, the u/ ue purge might've been more a reaction against the French than the British... I should see what Google has to say about it.

Don't worry about the lateness... it's been so busy/ crazy/ stressful that I almost forgot about leaving the comment until you responded! : )

LOL.

Apparently so, I should keep an eye on mine.

(And no worries about the lateness of the reply.)
