THIS IS SO TRUE!
Came across this by accident:
15 Weird Things Found In Every British Household
Although I'm not sure about 'weird' [or the 'British], it's just... stuff that we have in our house.

Me too. Did they have a snoop around my house?

The only reason #7 doesn't apply is because when we moved a few years ago, we went through all of our containers and lids and if we couldn't find matches, we got rid of them. It might be about time to go through things again, but I think we've stayed on top of it pretty well.
As for #8, we don't have an old Argos catalogues, but we do have several old Sears catalogues!
And with #14, I only have a few old European coins... mostly ones my dad would get from folks at work (he was in the Air Force) when I was a kid because he knew I liked foreign coins. I also still have a one pound note he got from someone when I was in high school.

...and definitely no Argos catalogue. Screwfix, possibly, propping something up in the shed somewhere... I suspect it's the catalogue bit that counts.

How very depressing.

And the shopping bags too cute to throw away! Doesn't everybody else keep those?

The paint will get used. You just wait and see. Those keys? Hey, they open something somewhere, it might be at the bottom of a landfill but Dr. Who will need it.

Though I do get uses out of those pretty bags that are too pretty to throw away and the plastic bags I keep stuffed in one plastic bag. *Grins*
Think it is a left over of the Depression Era mentality: Nothing should be thrown away because everything is useful.
*CACKLES*
Alas...no Argos mags for us. That is JC Penney, Sears and Roebuck catalogues and Time magazines.

Yeah, I'm not sure why they prefaced it with 'weird'... And although a few are of course specifically British (like the Argos catalogue) then there are obviously different ones in different countries. Sears is probably the best equivalent, as you say.

And yeah, what if you throw it away and then suddenly need it...?

And Americans chop endings (and letters generally) off all kinds of words. Plus just change the spelling. (See 'Drive thru'...) Dunno why that is. Feeling like the need independence from oppressive British spelling? ;)

Yes, tins and cans are the same thing... actually, years ago, we used to call them "tin cans," but somehow that got shortened to just "cans." I don't think they're made out of actual tin any more. Circular, metal, with a lid--exactly.
AFAIK, it was Daniel Webster who wrote the first "American" dictionary and decided US English didn't need the letter "u" and various French flourishes. Come to think of it, the u/ ue purge might've been more a reaction against the French than the British... I should see what Google has to say about it.
Don't worry about the lateness... it's been so busy/ crazy/ stressful that I almost forgot about leaving the comment until you responded! : )

I think the words are more or less interchangeable...

What did we do before google? /rhetorical question

(And I saw the date on the post and added the apology to every reply. So at least people weren't completely thrown. Like - what was that in regard to?)
