Maybe the tins and cans are really the same thing? Just with a different name? Circular, metal, with a lid?

And Americans chop endings (and letters generally) off all kinds of words. Plus just change the spelling. (See 'Drive thru'...) Dunno why that is. Feeling like the need independence from oppressive British spelling? ;)
