AO3 Reaches 1 Million Fanworks !!!

In the day's honour I uploaded She Can Be. She Will Be. which is - if I had to choose - the River fic I'm the most proud of. (And still works perfectly omg. Looked through it and dear Lord, one of the lines has just gained immense new significance in the light of DotD...)

Anyway, I remember the events that spawned AO3, and the fact that it has over 1 million works representing 14,353 fandoms today is just amazing! Looking back, it started November 14, 2009 and I managed to snag an invite & join on the 16th! Goodness, I had no idea I got my foot in the door that early. :) And I still have lots of stories to upload...

But nevermind that - congrats to AO3, and well done fandom!

Haha, yeah, I understand that! I quickly wondered if I couldn't put something up, too, but nope—well, I could have thrown in one of my old HP fics, or other fandoms, but since my AO3 is pretty much just DW it would have felt silly… But snagging the tag is great, and especially for a fic you're very proud of, and quite right too =)

I am planning to put everything there, but last time I imported a load of stuff the process was still rather cumbersome and I decided to wait until they made it smoother.

Might go back sometime and have another go. Because I'd like to have all my stuff archived, and Ao3 is just a lovely place.

(One upon a time I had my own website! One of my LJ friends had webspace, and made it for me, complete with banners and everything. *sigh* Those were the days...)

LJ is my home, so everything is here, but I just like the idea of an archive of all my fic, because it's so scattered here.

And oh yes, long since gone. It was called 147days. Buffy through and through.

Yeah, it just sounds neater… I have everything on FF.net because that's where I got started, so I keep posting there, even though I'm more involved with the DW fandom here and on AO3. But I can still have a look and think "holy hell, that's a lot of fic!".

…like when I have a random stats check and find out I've posted a total of 584K and submitted 8K of reviews. O…kay? XD

I never went near FF.net. At first because I'd never heard of it, and then they decided they didn't want the NC-17 stuff and LJ fandom spurned it completely.

And yeah, I get you. Just looking at the numbers is sobering.

Well I didn't ;) I had the feeling I'd just written a handful of long fics and a bazillion of tiny ones, so I just stared at the number… Things pile up! ;)

Well, the the eldest was wedded to Tumblr, before quitting. The 12 year old hangs out on Google+. They'd probably find FF.net very oldfashioned. ;)

It ate too much time, and she's a Terribly Sensible Young Lady.

Mind you, it was great to have someone in the house who had a foot in the Tumblr door and knew what was happening. I can't be bothered. :)

Oh, she's Wise indeed! :D I can completely empathize with that, Tumblr always tempted me because of the stunning graphics, but I keep it at arm's length since my time management is already terrible, ROFL. Do know I probably couldn't tear myself from it if I allowed myself to get addicted, though—I don't know how fond she was of it in the first place, but that's one girl with willpower =)

Tumblr, I think, is a little like a High School? Plus you need the attention span of a teenager to keep up... Very shiny, but also full of factions.

And oh yes, she's a good 'un, my daughter. :)

I actually had an account already before the open beta (I joined Feb 2009), because noticed a bug in the archive while reading fic and reported it, and to my surprise a few weeks later received an invite to closed beta :D

And I remember how Buffy was actually the biggest TV-fandom on the archive for a while after the open beta, until Supernatural and Stargate and other whippersnapper fandoms overtook it ;)

\o/ AO3's grown up so quickly - when I first heard of it, its servers were so slow, I could never even get on it, let alone get an account, but once they upgraded at some point, it swiftly became addictive to use. Now I'm even a wrangler.

I was definitely only still wondering what it was in 2009, though. I got an invite to join before Yuletide 2010 - Yuletide was the irresistible lure. :-)

See to me AO3 is still 'new' - I remember Strikethrough (in 2007) which was one of the main thing that helped to get fandom together and create OTW, and AO3. Can't believe it's been 7 years...

(He remembers the fall of Arcadia, and knows that there are some moments that will never leave you, no matter what.)

I didn't realise that Arcadia would be the Doctor's 'No More' moment, but as the fic centres around River reaching a similar place, the perfection of the line is doubly wonderful.
