British adverts...

Explanation for non-Brits.

This is one of those little in-between ads from the TV channel Dave (Halfords sponsor motoring programmes as far as I can tell - more ads here if anyone is very curious & very bored). Happened to see it this morning when Darcy was watching Top Gear and it amused me:

Secondly, there's this advert, which has which has received more than 250 complaints! Mostly it just cracks me up:

(This would be the British version of the Cheerios ad, btw. *g*)

Also, this Tumblr has made my day:

ETA: Shark found on New York subway! And here we've been, ridiculing Sharknado...

OK, I can sort of see why people might find the Marmite commercial complaint-worthy, but I laughed.

Well, I have to say that at the very beginning I thought they were going to compare it to child abuse and was all ready to cringe, but then it veered off into pet carriers. Something of a relief. :D

BWAHAHAHA! #2 was a riot! very laugh-worthy.

I agree....nasty stuff. Introduced to it on a trip to England about 100 years ago and I can still have taste flashbacks.

Totally believe you! lol. Careful or they will be coming to get you. :)

LOL at that second one - especially the shot of the dog with his face pixelated. Don't know why people complained.

Huh. I suppose I can see that in a way. But still think people are overreacting. I doubt any harm was meant by it.

I definitely understand that. I'm pretty fierce over our pets.

LOL. Don't mess with British people's wheelie bins. I'll make a note of that. :)

Thanks for sharing the Moff-hate tumblr! It's nice to see someone defending him. : )

It just makes me smile how RTD's era has been whitewashed in hindsight, when at the time, the whinging about pretty much everything he did was nonstop.

I especially laugh when people say now that RTD wrote women "so much better" than Moff, when at the time, everyone was complaining about how Rose mooned over Ten, how Jackie was paired off with the alt-world duplicate of her late husband, and how everyone in general had Mother Issues. And those are three things I can think of, right off the top of my head. IIRC, there were about a million more.

Arguably, Moff has a much better record writing female characters. No matter how much anguish they endure, they seem to come through it with their guts and dignity intact. I'm not sure you could say that about all RTD's female characters. Maybe only Martha?

And it's funny how nobody ever complains about RTD indulging himself with the Doctor-Master barely concealed slash. (Not that **I'm** complaining, mind you!) He gets a completely free pass for putting the Doctor and the Master in a bondage chair... Moff puts River in a pair of spike heels or Amy in a short skirt, and people start writing Ph.D.-level dissertations about his misogyny and sexism. Uh, double standard, anyone?

I guess everything seems better (or at least maybe not so bad) in hindsight, but when you type out the staggering list of things people complained about in the RTD era, it really is mind-boggling how quickly fans forgot everything they hated before Moff took over. You're so right to point out things like Ursula, which had the fandom up in arms for IIRC close to two years. But now that Moff is on board, RTD is getting all this weird retroactive praise for "understanding women so well."

:::bangs head against wall:::

I can't download the video at work, but I completely believe you. And it's weird--I feel like under Moff, the Doctor has so much more compassion. Compare the Doctor's treatment of Mickey to his treatment of Rory. I got the feeling that while the Doctor came to grudgingly respect Mickey, in his mind, Mickey was always going to be the guy who freaked out at the very thought of aliens (and who was a rival for Rose's affections, let's face it). Maybe part of why the Doctor could deal better with Rory is that the Doctor wasn't interested in Amy, so he didn't view Rory as a rival; plus Rory, after some initial freaking out, coped better with the idea of aliens. But overall, I think Eleven was just kinder--characters had to really, really press his buttons (like Madame Kovarian or Solomon) before he would go all Oncoming Storm on them. And I think Moff has had a lot to do with that change in characterization. But does he get any credit for that? Of course not!

OMG...both of these commercials just...omg *CACKLES* though I can see how/why people would complain about the last one. Still. Grow a sense of humor, world!

The last kid's face at the end just made it for me.

OMG...I would have thought it would be one of the alligators in the sewer, but a shark? Okay...*shrugs* That's New York for you.

Dude. That Tumblr...brilliant!! Makes me smile!

*HUGS*

At first I thought you had mixed up the videos and your comments, which I guess just shows how American I am because I could kind of usee why men kissing might cause complaints (in a way that I don't really understand but have seen happen, like the Cheerios commercial) but couldn't figure out why making fun of Animal Planet would. Then it occurred to me, do you guys even get Animal Planet and its preponderance of reality animal rescue shows over there?

But mostly I don't really get why any of the three would cause people to complain. Men kiss, inter racial marriages happen and they often produce adorable kids, and Marmite sits on cupboards and yet the world is still spinning. LOL
