You no happy? Oh dear. He's a wonderful actor... (I've had a huge soft spot for him ever since CoE, because he was so unbelievably incredible in that. He should have won all the awards!)
Same here. I knew the choice would not be as daring as I would have hoped him to be. But Peter really softens the blow of Matt's departure. He is going to be mind-blowing! *happy polka at nearly midnight*
As someone pointed out, if it had been a woman or someone black they'd have that stamped across everything, and have to fight that every step of the way... People would focus on what they were, more than the character. Hopefully in future it'll be easier to make a switch. :)
Either way, this is a very good choice, and I am excited to see what he does with the role. He is exceedingly versatile.
From local hero to intergalactic one. This is the most excited I've been about the show in two years.
Also, I'm willing to bet that several people are already working on fanvids inserting Malcolm Tucker into the Whoniverse. Has anyone ever tried just swearing at a Dalek until it explodes?
You know, one of the things I'm looking forward to is people looking up what else he's been in, watching an episode of The Thick Of It and having their brains short-circuit from all the swearing. Why yes you can do that on British television, if you do it right...
The announcement makes me a bit sad because it makes it even more real that Eleven is over and I will love Eleven forever and ever but if Eleven has to go, at least they picked an older doctor and someone who looks to be totally different to Matt. Also, Twelve and Clara- things could get quite different :)
But...I still will miss my darling Eleven. I am mourning him already, but I know it won't REALLY hit me until we are midway through Peter's third episode, lol!!
Yup. He's Hartnell's age. I like it. A complete change.
(Mind you I think I'm in denial about Eleven. I can't picture Capaldi's Doctor, like, at all. Whereas Eleven exists in every movement of Matt's hands.)
Oooooh, he's marvellous. I was actually thinking about him a few hours before the announcement, but figured that they probably wouldn't cast him as he's already been on both DW and TW. I'm so pleased I was wrong!
Kind of ho hum about the idea. I still have everlasting bitterness about CoE so his connection to that does not help.
I know he's a great actor, but he's not necessarily what I pictured as the Doctor. But he could blow me away when I watch, so I hope I do end up enjoying him.
Oh I get the CoE thing (I'm not bitter, just scarred), but as concerns Capaldi I mostly came away from CoE with pure awe at his acting ability. I can't wait to see what he does with the Doctor - partly because I can't picture it. Am looking forward to seeing what his costume will be though. That should help!
I've already started preparing my media for Twelvey. I've almost finished my Farewell to Eleven vid with the song "How I Go" by Yellowcard - just waiting for the regeneration scene so I can finish it.
I've already picked out the song for my first Twelve video - "The World Belongs to Me" by My Darkest Days. I need a reason to look forward to Eleven's end.

And it's a goooood choice.
(Love your Clara icon & might steal it. Who's it by?) ETA: No worries, I've hunted the icon maker down...)

I'm actually surprised Catherine Tate's foul-mouthed granny character never tried that. ; )

It does go along with my dad's theory that the BBC only hires a few actors and recycles them frequently. :)

Re: Twelve
Not that I'm not excited about Twelve. I just want them both.
