Fic: Mrs Saxon's Diary. Part 6/10
Finally back - sorry it's been a while, but RL has been *very* busy and also this chapter wouldn't behave. Not sure I got it right, but I'm fed up of trying to make it better. Have also managed to finish the rest of the story, more or less, so hopefully you won't have to wait long. Thank you so much for reading! :)
Setting: Christmas 2006 (Around 5 months pre-'Sound of Drums')
Spoilers: End of S3.
Pairing: Lucy/Harry.
Rating: PG-13.
Previous parts here.
Christmas 2006
Our first Christmas together as a married couple. Also the last Christmas ever, of course. I think I’ll miss it - although Harry might let me celebrate it just for us... He seemed to take to it.
Most of Christmas Eve however he was glued to his special computer - not sure exactly what he’s done to it, but it does things I’ve never seen a computer do.
Early afternoon his ‘Doctor’ alarm went off, and after that I couldn’t tear him away as he followed his fellow Timelord’s escapades around London. With him was some woman in a wedding dress - name of Donna, so Harry told me - but nothing made Harry really sit up until they went to HC Clement’s, an old Torchwood property.
He explained it all afterwards, but I didn’t quite catch it since he always uses so many long words - except it was to do with some ancient alien that he’s been watching for more than 6 months now, concealed in a giant star in the sky. He was terribly pleased when the Doctor showed up, saying that this would make his job so much easier. Still he alerted the army and kept an obsessive vigil, until finally in the evening he made the call and the star was shot down.
Afterwards he spent a long time looking through old Torchwood and UNIT files, asking me to sit down with him when he found his own. He had a lot of fun reading through them, and pointed out several of his former regenerations, which still makes me feel very strange. Overall it was very enjoyable, until he came to notes on an imprisonment in a castle on an isolated island. He told me how he’d managed to sway the governor's mind and finally escaped with the help of creatures he called ‘Sea Devils’ - that dismissive tone in his voice which always creeps in whenever humans underestimate his abilities. But he sat looking at the image of his prison for a long while, completely silent, and then shuddered (clearly more unsettled that he wanted to let on). Then he swiftly turned the whole thing off, before insisting on giving me my Christmas present early.
(I’ll attach a picture later, since words really can not do it justice.)
Christmas Day father came round of course. He is very frail by now, but ever so cocky that he’s defied all the doctors’ predictions. Harry and I always share a private smile over that.
My Christmas dinner was flawless, and yet again caused Harry to chide himself for never marrying before. I think those are my proudest moments - when I know that my contribution makes a difference, however small. And then I think of all those long, lonely years he must have had, with no one to look after him; no one to take care of all the little details; no one to trust and confide in, the way you can a wife. I know my part is only minor, and yet I know it is worthwhile. Also I know I'm good at it - part of me feels like I was always waiting to play this role.
And as I said already - he really seemed to enjoy the whole Christmas spectacle, the way he enjoys so many of humanity’s inventions. I won’t be at all surprised if he invents a great many 'holidays' once he’s taken over the world.
New Year
Harry has been very excited tonight - because this year will be his year. Year Zero he calls it.
It was very odd watching all the programmes summing up the old year and wondering what lay ahead. Because I know. And all the talk about celebrities and global warning and wars... it almost makes me laugh now, how pointless it all is.
My Master will put an end to it all, and I will be by his side. Just a few more months to go, and there will be no more need for secrets!
Part 7.
