Mrs Saxon's Diary. Part 3
Dinner went better than I could have imagined in even my wildest dreams. Father - who was less than pleased when I told him that I was seeing a politician - spent the entire night monopolising Harry. Between them they sorted out the economy, foreign policy, Europe, crime... everything. And on every topic Harry would tell Daddy exactly what Daddy has been saying for years. After he’d left father told me to hold onto him - ‘This man is exactly what Britain needs, Lucy.’
I know that Harry must be using his mindreading ability to do this - it’s a surefire way of getting everyone to agree with you. He knows that I know... and yet he trusts me to keep his secret, even though we’ve only known each other for no more than a few weeks. It makes me feel very special, but it also makes me wonder - why me? What did he see in me - and I think that must be a literal statement - that made him choose me? I know so very little about him, that I don’t know what to think. Does he really care about me? He has to, surely...
[Some weeks later.]
Father has been diagnosed with cancer.
It was just a routine checkup at the doctor, and then... next thing I knew I was sat in a hospital waiting, while some consultants or other were examining Daddy, and telling me things with lots of long latin names that I couldn’t understand. We can afford the best in medical care of course, but there were still barriers everywhere, forms to fill in, doctors who couldn’t be reached and so on. Feeling helpless and scared, but (of course) being unable to show this to anyone, I called Harry... and then everything suddenly changed.
He turned up in no time at all, as if by magic, and just - took charge. In the space of a few hours top cancer specialists were arriving from all over the world to see what they could do, and my father was given top-priority in every way.
“Don’t worry about a thing Darling, I’m here now,” Harry said, and I can’t explain how relieved I felt.
[A few days later.]
The diagnosis is even worse than I feared: Several malignant tumours that are too deeply imbedded to operate. They will try a whole regimen of new drugs, but the outlook is bleak. My hand is shaking as I write, because I never thought I’d lose Daddy like this. He’s always been strong, and now...
Father of course took it all in his stride, but I could see how shocked he was - he is only 65 after all. When he’d finally fallen asleep, face uneasy and pained, despite the morphine, I couldn’t help crying. A few months they had said - if we were lucky and the drugs worked.
Then I looked up at Harry and asked, clinging to hope (because I have seen how he sneers at human medicine): “Can you make him better?”
Harry looked at me silently, then very slowly shook his head.
“I can’t cure him Lucy. If only I could go back a couple of years - even just one - I could stop it before it got critical. But - I can’t.”
There came a hard and angry look over his face, but then he shook it off.
“But what I can do, is this.” He walked over to the bed, switched off the morphine, and then carefully put his hands on father’s head. He stood very, very still for a few minutes, eyes closed, and then stepped back, looking a little pale and drained.
“There. He won’t feel any more pain - and I can guarantee that he will live for at least another year.”
And then he had to leave - he has just been appointed as Defence Minister and is frightfully busy, and yet he has barely left my side for days.
I don’t know what I’d have done without him. I wish I could somehow show my gratitude - but what do I have to offer an immortal alien with god-like powers?
