Torchwood....
It was pretty much as I expected, I think - entertaining, but not brilliant. (Mostly I care about the pretty boy, so entertaining is *fine*!)
The first episode was of course mostly set-up, and although I like Gwen well enough, I got a little tired of how slowly it moved. But using a nosy newbie for exposition is a tried and tested formula so I can't blame them for using it. Main problem with this - not enough Capt. Jack. It's kinda awful, but I've turned into a complete fangirl - I resent other characters taking time away from him... but then none of the others is remotely as pretty or interesting or sexy. *sigh* Since his very first appearance I've thought that he's like a tall, handsome, charming and charismatic Tom Cruise (I never got the point of Tom Cruise btw. Does nothing for me). I am trying to think of anything to say about the plot, but I'm drawing a blank... the alien was kinda lame, but it was generally OK. Did the job anyway.
'Day One' was more interesting (and how nice is it that spaceships land in Cardiff and not Washington? Ridiculous, yes, but I liked it anyway). It was a bit over the top with the whole 'Look! Sex! Lots of sex! This is Doctor Who for grown-ups!!!!! Because look - sex!', but the first scene worked rather well - the moment when the guy suddenly exploded in a golden cloud as Carys climaxed was oddly affecting - sort of beautiful and haunting and disturbing. Oh and surprising as well of course. It got a leetle OTT towards the end (as she fell into her father's arms, Darcy mimicked her voice "Oh daddy - I almost turned the mailman into a bag of flour!" Ahem).
Anyway, I liked Gwen using her skills as a policewoman, and seeing Carys as a person, rather than a case. She's obvously the Rose (/Cordy) character, there to keep Jack (The Doctor/Angel) in touch with his human side. And of course they added a bit of UST with that kiss...
But - I really don't want Gwen/Jack. She's nice and all, but he'd be utterly boring if he went and fell in love. See this is where I think Torchwood can really be different from of Doctor Who. The Doctor is almost a-sexual - that's not to say that there wasn't a ton of UST between him and Rose, but I really couldn't see them ever going further than a kiss (it's the whole tortured past thing etc. See Angel), and I love how their relationship was portrayed. But Capt. Jack flirts with pretty much anything! I *loved* the fact that he mentioned his 'back-catalogue' and implied that it was huge. He should be gettin' some on a regular basis, and a lot of the time with pretty, pretty boys! Oh yes. (It's very strange, I can't remember ever being such a whore with any other character.) Anyway, of course they went and added the immortality/invincibility thing, which is *very* cool, and puts him right up there with other immortal heroes like Angel, Spike and The Doctor. Yay!
What I'm wondering though, is how does this bit of Torchwood match up to what we've seen before - in 'Doomsday' most specifically. Does Jack just run the Cardiff division? There was the whole Yvonne deal - maybe she'll guest star, presuming of course that the Doomsday stuff is still in the future? A timeline would be *really* nice! And why is he in the 21st Century? Did he go there deliberately or was it an accident? Does he see himself as having a mission in Torchwood, or is he quite simply using the skills he has to make a living? Is he hoping for a spaceship to crash that'll be fixable so he can get away again? (I would love to see that conflict btw. And all the open mouths as he figured out how to make it fly! *g*)
Anyway, I was wondering greatly about the hand in the jar, when suddenly I remembered The Christmas Invasion - The Doctor had his hand chopped off!!! I'm willing to bet anything you like that the hand is The Doctor's and that Jack got hold of it in some bizarre, yet logical fashion. (ETA: This is possibly a well known fact that I never knew what with being a spoiler phobe...)
And finally - dropdead gorgeous men in long coats should *always* stand on top of tall buildings. Oh yes.
