Reptile Boy.
Yet again an episode I've not seen in years and that I enjoyed an awful lot!
Tried to be brief and failed spectacularly:
Really liked the teaser with the three of them watching a Bollywood movie. Not only because of these lines:
Xander: Hmm. And we thought just because we didn't have any money or anyplace to go this would be a lackluster evening.
Willow: I know! We could go to the Bronze and sneak in our own tea bags and ask for hot water.
But also because it just showed how *young* they are - ages get mentioned a lot:
Angel: "You're sixteen years old. I'm two hundred and forty-one."
Xander: "[...] and that's for the last sixteen and a half years!"
And there are also numerous references to the High School/College age gap. Cordelia is particularly keen on 'older boys', but both she and Buffy are shown to be seriously out of their depth.
Now this is (I think) the first time we see Buffy drink (or at least attempting to get drunk - she's upset about Angel).
Buffy: "What the hell. I'm tired of being mature."
And then she gulps down the drink she knows has 'a smidge of alcohol'. Of course the drink turns out to be spiked and the whole things end *badly*! The next time Buffy gets drunk is in 'Beer Bad' where she is also trying to drown her sorrows (this time over Parker) and ends up as Cave!Buffy - not as bad as before, but still not a stellar result. The last time is in 'Life Serial' where she goes drinking with Spike (again drowning her sorrows, only this time over herself) and the only badness is a horrible hangover. Interesting as how she gets older she copes better with her drink, and also how each of these episodes is the 5th in their respective season! :)
What else - oh yes youth. It is again emphasised by Giles' fatherly/teacherly (Watcherly) attitude. He trains with her, sends her out patrolling, tells her to do her homework... and she tries to get out of it, like any youngster who doesn't want to do their duty, whatever it might be. She pouts and cajoles and smiles sweetly until she gets her way. And it just struck me how much growing up she does - come S6 she patrols every night quite simply because she has to, although she has no one to tell her to do it, and she probably wants to even less than before. But that innate sense of duty has become such a part of her that she does it without thinking.
Now, Angel... things have been going well on the 'doomed romance' front, and they're both wondering where it's going:
Willow: You dreamed about Angel again?
Buffy: Third night in a row.
[...]
Buffy: I'm brainsick. I can't have a relationship with him.
Willow: Not during the day, but you could ask him for coffee some night. It's the non-relationship drink of choice.
Of course Angel is being noble (or trying to be). I'm going to do quite a long quote, but I think it matters - especially in the light of Buffy's relationship with Spike later on:
Angel: What are you sayin', you wanna have a date?
Buffy: No.
Angel: You don't wanna have a date?
Buffy: Who said 'date'? I-I-I never said 'date'.
Angel: Right. You just wanna have coffee or somethin'.
Buffy: (hopefully) Coffee?
Angel: I knew this was gonna happen.
Buffy: What? What do you think is happening?
Angel: You're sixteen years old. I'm two hundred and forty-one.
Buffy: I've done the math.
Angel: You don't know what you're doing, you don't know what you want...
Buffy: Oh. No, I, I think I do. I want out of this conversation.
(starts to walk past him)
Angel: (bumps into her) Listen, if we date you and I both know one thing's gonna lead to another.
Buffy: One thing already has led to another. You think it's a little late to be reading me a warning label?
Angel: I'm just tryin' to protect you. This could get outta control.
Buffy: Isn't that the way it's supposed to be?
He grabs her by the shoulders and pulls her closer. She draws a startled breath.
Angel: This isn't some fairy tale. When I kiss you, you don't wake up from a deep sleep and live happily ever after.
Buffy: No. When you kiss me I wanna die.
[At this point Darcy made a face and turned to me: "'When you kiss me I want to die'? What the hell does that mean?" Heh.]
Cheesy and incomprehensible lines aside, this stuff's gooood! 'This could get out of control'/'Isn't that the way it's supposed to be?' That says *so much* about Buffy and how she approaches relationships. And for some reason reminded me of OMWF:
SPIKE: (spoken) You should go back inside. Finish the big group sing. Get your kum-ba-yayas out.
BUFFY: I don't want to.
SPIKE: (sighs) The day you suss out what you do want, there'll probably be a parade. Seventy-six bloody trombones.
BUFFY: Spike...
SPIKE: Look, you don't have to say anything.
BUFFY: (sings) I touch the fire and it freezes me.
SPIKE: (sings) I died...
BUFFY: I look into it and it's black/This isn't real/But I just want to feel
SPIKE: So many years ago/But you can make me/Feel
Both men say that she doesn't know what she wants, but she does - very much. And it will get out of control and the results will be very different to what they thought. But there are reversals - when Angel talks about sex, Buffy talks about love. It's the opposite when it's Spike. And Buffy does not want to die when she kisses Spike - she wants to try to grab at life again - get back the fire she lost...
But I absolutely don't have time for thinking about it any deeper. Sadly.
And that's pretty much all I have time for. But I'll end with the most wonderful of scenes - Cordy and Jonathan (seen for the second time and now with a name! *g*):
Cordelia: Thank you, Jonathon. (looks at the cappuccino) Did we forget something?
Jonathon: Um... Cinnamon, chocolate, half-caf, nonfat.
Cordelia just looks at him. He realizes his mistake.
Jonathon: Extra foam!
Cordelia grabs the muffin and waves the cappuccino away. She steps over to Xander, Willow and Buffy at their table. Xander is reading the Sunnydale Press.
Cordelia: Young men are the only way to go.
Early episodes are such good fun! :)
