Play It Again, Sam Part 4

So, here comes the scene that 'The Yoko Factor' never gave us - Spike, Angel and Riley all together. But it's safe to say that Angel and Spike have come a long way since then. If you want to catch up, previouslies are here. And so, onto

Play It Again, Sam

Part 4

Angel looked up when he heard the lift arrive. And instantly frowned.

“Spike! How many times have I told you not to take that sword!”

Unconcerned Spike put it on the desk.

“No idea - I’ve not been listening. Now, let me introduce you to the charming Mrs. Samantha Finn. Sam, this is Angel, the original ‘Vampire With A Soul’, complete with a diploma in brooding!”

He cast a wicked glance at Angel, that made Riley seriously doubt whether he had a soul, and added, “I like to think of myself as the new and improved model!”

If looks could kill, Spike would have been a pile of ashes on the floor, but Angel decided to ignore Spike’s smirk and instead got up and shook Sam’s hand.

“Very pleased to meet you Mrs. Finn. If there’s anything we can do, just tell me.”

Sam looked at the vampire in front of her. So this was the famous Angel, Buffy’s first love. He looked... good!

“Thank you, Mr. Angel, your people have helped us enormously already.”

Angel smiled at the beautiful young woman. Even in a kevlarsuit she was more than usually attractive.

“Oh, it’s just Angel.”

He looked at the young man.

“Riley.”

Riley tried to look casual, and nearly succeeded. “Long time, no see, Angel. I hear you got yourself a law firm, how’s that working out?”

Angel half smiled. “Well, having a private helicopter is nice. And having killed a large portion of our clients, the rest seem to be falling in line - more or less. Sadly we can’t kill the human clients, they tend to be worse than the demons. But you know, business is business.”

A stiff nod. “Good for you.”

There was an awkward pause as noone knew quite what to say. Riley began to feel increasingly uncomfortable. That Spike suddenly had a soul, was strange enough. But this was just outright weird. He didn’t remember much from the first time he had met Angel, but had come away with the distinct impression, that here was someone who liked to hit first and ask questions later. Only here Angel was, every inch the professional businessman - expensive suit, polite manner, stylish office... .

Sam suddenly seemed struck by something and turned to Riley. “We should call Major Ellis and give him a report, he needs to know the HST’s are eliminated.”

Angel smiled. “Don’t worry about it, it’s all sorted out - the Major seemed rather relieved that Wolfram and Hart had saved you and... eliminated the HST's... What does that stand for by the way?”

Spike grinned. “Hostile SubTerrestials - didn’t happen to tell him that you were one yourself, did you? And that you live in a penthouse? I’m Hostile 17 by the way.”

Angel shot him a warning glance, and kept talking to Riley. “He also said that you and your team are on leave until further notice.”

Riley looked stunned. “How did you...?”

Spike laughed.

“Told you mate! Seriously, there is very little they can’t do here. Now, would you like to see how your guy - Jack was it? - is doing? If you tell me what you’d like to eat, I’ll order you some. There are plenty of lackeys around, so I’m sure food and a room will be all be ready when you are. OK?”

Sam smiled. “That would be great, Spike, thank you so much.”

“No problem, Sam. I’ll see if I can nab someone to show you to the infirmary, since I’m pretty sure the boss here wants me to give him ‘a proper report’ of the fight.”

Opening the doors he shouted. “Oi, anyone here who wants to earn some brownie-points with the boss?”

Sam and Riley despatched with an eager (human) night guard, Angel and Spike faced each other.

"Right Spike, are you gonna tell me what the hell you were thinking bringing them here?”

Spike shrugged. “Don’t know. Found them and the other soldiers surrounded by a couple of hundred demons, figured I could save them and kill the demons at the same time, since that was why I was there in the first place.”

He slumped down on the sofa and stretched out his legs. “Nasty buggers by the way - those pincers nearly got my coat a dozen times.”

Angel sighed. “You know that’s not what I meant.”

Spike’s eyes narrowed. “Fine! Mr. Finn and I happen to have a lot of unresolved ‘issues’, and since the last time I saw him, he screwed up my life and blew up my home, I thought it was my time to be on top, for once. And Sam sure brightens up the surroundings! Saved her life, which is always a good way of being introduced - and watching soldierboy’s face as he tried to figure me out - priceless!”

Spike suddenly frowned. A shadow passed over his face, but it was gone so quickly, that Angel thought he had imagined it.

Serious now, Spike continued. “Anyway, as far as I can tell, they don’t know what the demons were really up to - thank goodness for army secrecy! It was ‘classified’ and they weren’t in the right class.”

Relief washed over Angel’s face. “Well that’s one worry out of the way. So, I suppose we should go have a look at the monkey paw.”
