Re-visiting a meme from last year...

So, a little over a year ago I did the WIP meme.

And looking back I'm feeling rather accomplished.

I finished My Immortal 2, and wrote all of Trust Me (I'm a Lying Liar Who Lies) and am now working on Chapter 19 of Dating the Cleverest Boy in the World, when the excerpt I posted then was the beginning of Chapter 9. (Which has moved the story from Christmas 2025 to Christmas 2027...)

However, I've also added a WIP to my list. The working title is 'Five Ways Jack Harkness Didn't Meet River Song'. (Or maybe 'Five Ways Jack Harkness Didn't Meet the Doctor's Wife'.) Which will range from fluff to very dark stuff.

Excerpt (this one's set between The Angels Take Manhattan and The Snowmen. No spoilers):
The answer from outside the temple was uncompromising. The Doctor lowered his head for a moment, and Jack could tell he was fighting to keep standing. Yet he once more looked out from the arched doorway at the furious, heavily armed hordes, and although his voice was quiet, it carried, and the words he spoke chilled Jack to the bone.

“Very well then. I tried to warn you.”

A beat, then he continued.

“Make peace with your gods.”

At this he turned, once more collapsing against the wall next to the archway, hand clutched against his side where the shirt was now soaked with blood and swallowing in pain as he found Jack’s face again, looking at something Jack couldn’t guess at.

“Time was, my name alone would have sent them running... Ah well, that’s all gone. For better or worse.”

Kneeling down by him, Jack tried to work out what on earth the Doctor was talking about and how to respond, when he laid a hand on Jack's arm.

“Stay away from the door - no idea what’ll happen, but the equivalent of an army is about to descend...”

I tinker with now and again, but it's refusing to work as it should, besides which my head is mostly being consumed by my darling Alex, so it could be a while before you see it. In the meantime, you're more than welcome to dip into my AU 'verse (Masterpost: Not The Last). It's my very own little playground where I try to examine what it means to be a Time Lord through my set-up: What would it be like for a Time Lord child (the Master's son, born during TYTNW - everything goes AU from thereon) to grow up on earth, always knowing that his real home has been destroyed, and having to patch together a way of living with the Doctor in loco parentis, Jack as a big brother figure, and his father in the wings, whispering about power and danger and the rights of his heritage...

Or rather, it's an examination of Time Lords through the prism of this very specific character and his very specific story. (He is so much his father's son - I re-read the naming of things recently (Best. Master fic. Ever. If you haven't read it, run, don't walk) - and I almost got chills at how much of Alex's reasoning I could see in young!Koschei...)

Anyway, if anyone feels like dipping their toes into my 'verse, the first stories aren't long ('Dating' being the odd one out in that it just keeps growing. Although I know exactly where it's going).

I am useless at trying to sell myself, after I got flamed years and years ago when I was a total newbie, so this is a vague sort of attempt at enticing more than 5 readers to the thing I am probably most invested in of anything I've written, because it's mine. The sandbox isn't, of course, but it is so far removed from canon now that it feels original. And I - selfishly - want my characters to be loved, because they're so dear to me.

Apologies for the ramble. And an excerpt from the very beginning of 'Not the Last'... Just because. *g*

The Master looked up, calm by now, but the anger was obviously still boiling right underneath the surface.

“Come to tell me my terms, have you? All the little hoops I’ll have to jump through to earn my ‘visitation rights’?”

The Doctor shook his head. “Not quite.”

The Master’s eyes narrowed. “What does that mean? I agreed to this imprisonment,” - the words were obviously near impossible to get past his lips - “on the understanding that I could see my boy!”

“Yeah...” The Doctor studied him, “That’s the part I’ve got a problem with. Could it be that there’s something in this world you value more than your own life?”

The Master didn’t answer, just stared at him coldly.

Letting his mind go back over recent events, the Doctor could still vividly recall the Master’s total panic as time began reversing, followed by his frantic rush to Lucy’s side to make sure the baby was still there - and his subsequent blinding fury. It had taken Jack and three of the soldiers to hold him back...

“You could have killed him - unmade him! You nearly destroyed my son, Doctor - I swear I’ll get you for this! I wish I’d killed all your precious humans and you too! Just wait - one day... one day I’ll get my revenge! Do you hear me?”

Was it actual selfless love of another? Was it possessiveness - or obsession? Or something different again? He didn’t know. Maybe even the Master himself didn’t know. But the Doctor wasn’t about to take a gamble on anything as capricious as feelings.
