LJ + Baman & Piderman

Re. the new update page etc... Mostly I think that this is clearly the Vista version of LJ, and hopefully it, too, will pass. I'm not too bothered, except for a few niggles.

The fact that the window itself adjusts to the size of what you're posting. Which is awkward when it comes to 5000 word long fics.

And the fact that I can no longer a) see the images in my moodtheme when I choose them, and because of that b) not choose an image & enter a different text.

Oh and I still hate the new icon choosing system. It is annoying.

Like I said - Vista. (Took me forever to find this icon again, remembering it from years ago, but never saving it back then. Am so pleased I managed to hunt it down though.)

Still not going to switch to DW mind you, as that would be swapping one set of annoying features for a different lot.

I shall leave you with something that will EAT ALL YOUR TIME. Every video is very short, but you do need to watch quite a few to get the hang of it. (By which I mean - it's completely surreal. But addictive.)

The interesting thing is that I started on LJ in 2006 or 2007, and I only got a DW account as a back-up myself. And I loved LJ as a place where I could be fannish; it gradually took over my interest from another, eventually more commercial, quasi-fannish site I'd haunted.

But I guess I felt the community was the people, not the place, and when the place started getting a "messy" feel to me, I realized I could still enjoy the people without sitting in the middle of the mess.

I began to use DW to post a year or so ago, I think; around the time of Release 88. The lack of respect I felt from LJ at that time did it for me.

Even then, I intended to do it only as a six month experiment. But DW ended up feeling so much cleaner to me. I knew that I could keep in touch with everyone on both platforms simply by cross-posting and reading my friends' page feeds from both, so I didn't feel as if I was losing LJ. I was just visiting it from a nicer livingroom.

I will probably always have some sort of paid account at both LJ and DW because I love my icons, and like to be free of ads now. But if enough people I know do start posting from DW, I might pare down to a basic account over here.

I KNOW.

I've been using the new friends feed on and off since they debuted it, and I will say they have been steadily improving it. A lot of my initial gripes have been smoothed out.

But I basically like the new direction they're taking the design in, so, ya know, YMMV.

Yeah, the update page sucks. I didn't notice before how much.
Selecting an icon is a pain (I've heard if you're using a mobile device too). And the scrolling *deep sigh*

When it gets worse I can always cross-post.

I just don't understand why they've done it.
I think the same reason they've made the new Friends page:
"Next comes the announcement about the beta friends page. The question of "why" is directly addressed, and it's explained that the hundreds of styls available on LJ right now make it difficult to develop new features (with the recent debacle of not everyone being able to see who reposted an entry given as an example)." (ruljautonews LJ, October 30th, 2012, about Release 98)

I remember but I don't know where it was that I've read LJ will go back to gain new people in U.S.A. because they are less strong there (Facebook is more popular).

Maybe they think if they are more like Tumblr or Twitter or Facebook they'll gain new people. They want to be more 'hip'. My guess.
