I don't watch it, but I was under the general impression that Merlin was not, in fact, for having serious thoughts about. (The impression I get from the fandom is that it's for shipping Merlin/Arthur and watching the prettiness go by, but this may be a skewed perspective.)

Oh you're absolutely right. But as my daughters are still rather young, all the shirtlessness and flirtyness goes over their head and they just laugh at everything. (Impish Girl was constantly making up little songs. Which was fun, but very annoying as it drowned out the dialogue. So I spent half the episode telling her to just shut up...)

I think the Merlin/Arthur ship is just funny. Kinda like Shelock and Watson. Only Sherlock doesn't hit Watson all the time.
