Pond Era in Trailers + a few thoughts

So, this is the first weekend in FOREVER when we've not needed to go anywhere or do something specific. It is BLISS. Anyway, immense nostalgia under the cut.

This is my favourite trailer EVER. Of anything - any show, any movie. It is flawless and perfect and beautiful and still makes me believe in magic the way nothing else ever has.

I've got two from S6, because the shift in tone is fascinating. The first one is very much continuing from S5 and hinting at darkness to come, but the other is... epic. The scale of everything is amplified and furthered by the extraordinary music and it makes me shiver. (Generally the way music is used in these trailers is utterly incredible.) Also it's interesting to note that the S5 trailer is 'narrated' by Amy, the first S6 one by the Doctor (but focussed on Amy) and the second by River. It beautifully illustrates the [narrative] shift from Amy to River, something of course also reflected in the clips used. The first one ends with "Monsters are real" - words spoken to a child - whereas the second ends with Amy shooting The Impossible Astronaut, a child, her child, brought up by and turned into a monster, and the very last shot is the Doctor peering forward, trying to find out who she is... Her identity is the driving force of S6, and she turns out to be All of the Things - Wife, Killer, Pond, Timelady, Storyteller, Weapon, Keeper of Secrets, Partner, Mirror etc. etc. Speaking of mirrors, the mystery surrounding Who She Is is a nice reflection Doctor Who... Even though we've spent a whole season delving into River, she still holds many secrets, and this is of course very deliberate. As his wife she needs to be as much of a Trickster as he. (OK, now I've rambled. But oh, these are such good trailers...)

And finally, this one from S7. There is no narrator, and it feels much more like a series of clips: snapshots; final, iconic moments. An end is coming. And the music is... clear, but almost subdued.

GAH BRILLIANCE.

I love the way Amy's run was bookended as a fairy story cum Peter Pan tale. I love the way EVERYTHING EVER MIRRORS THE LIBRARY.

I love the way the show keeps on riffing about the power of stories in a BIG GIGANTIC DANGEROUS TIMEY WIMEY UNIVERSE, I love the way myth is used, I love the way they are used to generate hope for all of the main characters.

I think it is why Moffat's who resonates with me more than RTD's did, even though both show runner's write ridic. plots aplenty as well as great ones. I just believe in Moffat's Doctor more, in his companions more, because they share the same perspective on life that I do.
