Addendum.

Addendum to my previous post (Speak Softly And Be River Song: Meta on River in the Library through the lens of TWoRS)

Firstly, when comparing the Angel episodes & the Library ones, it helps to bear in mind that River *knows* Eleven. He might be young & unusually touchy, but she knows how to 'manage' him: She knows how he reacts, how far she can push him, what to say... She has no such advantage when it comes to Ten.

(OK, so it might have been Ten who took her to Asgard for that picnic, but I'm guessing that he would have treated her as if she was made of glass - plus subdued angst all over everything. I mean - it would have been during the year he travelled alone, so... yeah. Not in a good place. Would probably have cried on her shoulder over Donna.)

Anyway, my point is this: Ten is, in temperament, hugely, vastly, different from Eleven, and River doesn’t know how to deal with him. And this brings me to my second point.

Here, have an image:

I love this scene to absolute pieces, and one of the reasons is because the Doctor so very clearly just likes River, and lets her know so in no uncertain terms. He is obviously utterly delighted with her just the way she is. And although they argue and fight and disagree on goodness knows how many things, this is one of the most basic cornerstones: They deeply appreciate each other. ("...and suddenly this man just drops out of the sky, he's clever and mad and wonderful...")

Now fastforward to the Library, and although Ten is curious, he is also hostile as hell, and I think this platform of fundamental appreciation, that River has always had, is pulled away from under her, and it’s one reason she falters so badly. She behaves just the way she does with Eleven (flirting, evasive, teasing) - and he doesn’t like it. It’s a blow below the belt.

Which is why this scene is so important, I think:

DOCTOR
What is it, what is CAL?

MR LUX
We need to get to the main computer, I'll show you.

DOCTOR
It's at the core of the planet.

RIVER
Well, then. Let's go!

She sonics the symbol on the floor at the center of the room, and it opens up.

RIVER
Gravity platform!

DOCTOR
I bet I like you.

RIVER
Oh, you do!

Finally, finally everything is falling into place for her, and her relief is palpable.

Speaking of River not changing, then this ties in with her overall role: As the Doctor is to his Companions, so River is to him: An agent of change.

Also, I made this:

Meeting for the first time is *deadly* for them... Literally. ('The first time I met you, you died.' No wonder they keep the spoilers carefully concealed.)

More important than my rambling is this vid, however. I can't even BEGIN... Although it (just like #1Crush) pairs up the scenes in my icon. This show. This ship.

And this vid just takes everything and tells their story perfectly, weaving together all the different parts, past and future stitched together, because they're back-to-front and they write each other with every meeting. I just. *hands*

Somewhat vaguely related, but I thought you might find this cool.

I'm doing a giant Doctor Who rewatch, and saw The Girl in the Fireplace last night. When the Doctor was mind melding with Reinette, she said this:

"Doctor, Doctor who? It's more than just a secret, isn't it?"

*claps* So, so true.
