You know, I actually looked up the reasons behind the spelling (because logically it ought to be damnit) and it's your reason EXACTLY! People don't want to swear 'properly'... (Personally then 'damnit' always makes me think of nits, which... weird, but offputting. Hence me being scrupulous. *g* And me a good Catholic and all...)
