I'm seriously surprised that Yahoo is still in business. Too bad for delicious though! I didn't use it too much but I did like it. Also, PERFECT gif. :D
I would endorse this except that this whole thing is now making me scared for Flickr. What would happen to Flickr? *debates how to save Flickr, head-in-a-jar-like, while killing off Yahoo*
I see others have mentioned Diigo, which I just heard about. I always like having a new service to try, but that might be more complicated than I want. And it might overlap too much with Zotero for my uses.
I never used Flickr, but I have seen others panicking. How DO you save stuff like that? I haven't the faintest. What would make Flickr dying both horrible and ironic is that it wasn't started by Yahoo in the first place and was huge and popular by the time it was bought (I'm not sure to what extent that is true of del.icio.us too?). And this was back before growing big enough to be bought up was the standard and accepted business model of start ups. Maybe there's some way for a service to re-liberate itself from the mothership. I seriously doubt Yahoo would be willing to let them loose now, but if the whole company was truly going down? I'd have to imagine they'd try to break up the assets rather than killing off everything out of spite.
There's also something called pinboard (see my latest post - or rather, follow the links). I don't know yet. I'm still in denial.) I think I'm going to grab an export file from del.icio.us now, just in case (I mean, they're not disappearing tomorrow, but I can see myself forgetting/putting it off long enough that it's too late). And I'm going to treat this like any other move and have a thorough clear-out because I'm sure I've never looked at 90 percent of those links ever again. And then I think I'm gonna wait for Wired or someone like that to run a thorough review of all the alternatives and maybe think about what I actually want from my bookmarking service . . .
And yes - I needed a change! (Eleven and children - can't go wrong!) Very true. And I like the blue and brown--classy.
What would make Flickr dying both horrible and ironic is that it wasn't started by Yahoo in the first place and was huge and popular by the time it was bought Huh. Yeah, I can see what you mean.
I'm not sure to what extent that is true of del.icio.us too? Dunno, to be honest. Although it's free service (without ads!) so I can see their annoyance at not making any money. Why they didn't just ask people to pay is beyond me though. I'd happily have coughed up!
I think I'm going to grab an export file from del.icio.us now, just in case Yeah, me too. It's the sort of move that you need to plan.
Very true. And I like the blue and brown--classy. Thank you. The brown wasn't planned, but the picture had so much brown in it that I wanted to tie everything together. Which worked out rather nicely. :)

I'll admit it wouldn't have been worth it for me if it was pay (which is why I'm probably not gonna do Pinboard). I actually got started using it for a class on new media and collaborative creativity; I'm sure the professor would not have had us sign up if it was a pay service. (Actually, that's kind of what's making me most melancholy over this whole business--I adored that class and that professor and am reminded of it every time I use del.icio.us.)
Oh I'm sure they'd have lost some customers (such is life) but there are a lot of people whose entire lives are on del.icio.us. *sigh* Why must big companies always be evil?
Nobody died. The world's gonna keep spinning. And somewhere out there the germs of surprising, innovative, hopefully open-source start ups are even now sprouting out of this fetid dung heap.
Dammit, I didn't use delicious much, but Yahoo!bookmarks is where ALL my favorite web sites are stored simply because I could transfer them from one computer to another. I don't know if there is another web service that does that.
Now I have to spend a day writing down all the addresses. For crap sakes. Oh well at least this will let me weed out the last of the geocites sites still in there.
I am going to write to them and tell them exactly what I think of them. Plus, that I'll never use a yahoo service again ever. And tell everyone I know the same. *fumes*
I'll never use a yahoo service again ever See, I have half a mind to do this, but I've had my email address for ages, and it was co-opted by Yahell when AT&T bought out SBC. It is annoying to have to change it, when I have TONS of stuff stored at the email server.
I'll never use a yahoo service again ever I saw that, but I am holding off on the unhappy fic until after Holiday, cause I need to keep my brain in the positive or I shall commit homicide on a customer or co-worker.

Thanks for rendering hours upon hours of my life useless, Yahoo.

Oh, in other news, when's the Dr. Who Christmas special? (Why am I so lazy, I should google and find out, but I'd rather ask you apparently!)

I'd better check if Diigo still has that import function - otherwise I'm going to lose thousands of
