Very quickly - if you've got the time, then this fic is the best look at the Master ever ever:

the naming of things: How to become the Master.

It's pretty much all fanon, showing the Doctor/Master friendship during their schooldays and how they (from more or less the same starting point) end up so very, very different. It's unbelievably well written and will give you the best look into the Master's psyche you could possibly want. Long though, but worth it. ETA: The Doctor (in Academy era stories generally) is known as Theta Sigma (this is canon) and the Master as Koschei (which is fanon, but the name fits very well. Info here, but only the first bit is actually relevant.)

Come to think of it, anything you have on the Doctor's attitude towards Jack wouldn't go amiss either (keeping in mind I haven't seen Torchwood). Pls?
