Day 5.
This icon cracks me up. Does anyone know who made it?
green_maia has written a fabulous post about RTD and Moffat, and you should all go read it. But here's the heart of it:
I think the difference between RTD and Moffat as far as plotting goes is not that Moffat can plot and RTD can't, but that what Moffat wants to do is perfectly matched with what Moffat is good at doing, whereas what RTD wants to do is not well-matched with what RTD is good at doing. Moffat wants to write clever plots that are like an intricate puzzle with all the pieces in place by the end - and that is exactly what Moffat is good at doing. RTD wants to write Grand Epic Vast Huge like-nothing-you've-ever-seen-before plots - but what he is good at doing is writing character stories.
My contribution to this brilliant insight was the observation that when RTD's big plot centres around a character moment, rather than just being set-up, it works beautifully. (See 'Parting of the Ways', 'Waters of Mars' and Day 5 of CoE f.ex.) It's when he constructs something grand just so that the Doctor can lose someone (to pick an example at random... *cough*) that it feels contrived. (Disclaimer: I don't mind, and am fond of Rusty.)
ETA: As for my own writing... Well a lot of it is just character stuff, with plotty bits added to tie the character moments together. The whole of 'My Immortal' is essentially just a story of a relationship. That said, some of my stories (most specifically my as-yet-unwritten 'Divided Destiny' - oh and 'Lost Soul') have rather neat character-moment-is-pivotal-to-the-resolution. *looks at fics* Not a lot of them though...
Anyway, today's writing went pretty well. Realised that I couldn't remember how Chapter 1 was supposed to end, and so started on Chapter 2 (which is a LOT of fun. I do like to do nice things for characters that have had a hard time of it.) - and then as I wrote began remembering what I meant to do with Chapter 1, so now I have the beginning of Chapter 2 written, plus a lot of notes for Chapter 1. (The ending is pretty funny. But then you can't go wrong with Ianto... *g*)
