Two thoughts: 'Vincent and the Doctor' and 'The Lodger'.
First of all: At the beginning of the Vincent ep Amy mentions that the Doctor has taken her to lots of lovely places, including Arcadia. This rang a bell, but I've not seen anyone else talk about the significance of this, so I wanted to mention it. From 'Doomsday':
DALEK SEK: How did you survive the Time War?
THE DOCTOR: By fighting. On the front line. I was there at the fall of Arcadia. Someday I might even come to terms with that.
This adds yet another layer to the Doctor's actions - he takes Amy somewhere that, to her, is a true wonder, but to himself is a reminder of one of his worst memories (one of his worst failures?) - showing again how very hard Rory's death has hit him, and how he might even be trying to punish himself somehow.
~~~
Secondly: The air kisses in The Lodger. I re-watched that ep yesterday, on tape (because I record everything, obviously), and happened to re-wind a little too far and caught the end of Vincent and the Doctor. And there it was - Vincent kissing the Curator! And now I am completely convinced that the Doctor was copying Vincent. :)
And LOL re: air kisses. I think you're right!
Oh no, I don't think so. As I said, my hunch is that he chose it deliberately for the sake of the pain.
Makes sense, doesn't it? :)
Okay, somehow you made me infinitely love Eleven more than I already did. Geez! (I am so bad at finding connections this season, it's like my brain power dropped by 1000 points!)
But I do agree very much that Rory's death hit him deeply---which is why I wasn't too upset by the fact that Amy can't mourn, because the Doctor can, and very clearly is, and we get to do that with him. And I definitely would think it'd be in character for him to punish himself, because a) Rory was only there in the first place because of Amy, who was only there for the Doctor, and b) Rory died saving the Doctor from being shot---so he'd see all that as being his fault.
Aww man. *hugs them all*
But yeah, totally didn't hear the "Arcadia" thing and did not at all realize the Vincent connection with the air kissing! Hee! I LOVE THIS SORT OF STUFF! \o/
This made me smile like you wouldn't believe! :)
*beams* (And I'm... I dunno. I've got lots of thoughts, but when I try to write them down I forget half of them, thus having to do extra posts, weeks late...)
That is a very good point. (Did you see the stories I rec'd? All very short, but utterly perfect.)
*nodnodnod* (Like in Vincent and the Doctor when he talks about how risky their venture is and how they could make half the paintings disappear just like that and it'd be their fault. He definitely puts the blame on himself.)
Aww man. *hugs them all*
That's how I feel too!
But yeah, totally didn't hear the "Arcadia" thing
Now I feel all clever. ;)
OH ME TOO! And I don't even *care* if the air kissing wasn't a deliberate thing by the writers, it just fits so beautifully.
(SORRY ABOUT THE HTML FAIL!)
