Star Wars and Doctor Who

I have to say that life has been rather good these last few days. I was kinda dreading the holidays (2 weeks with little children 24/7!!!!), but because of the lovely weather they spent a great deal of time outside, making it possible for me to actually get stuff done! And by that I mean that I've tidied their bedroom COMPLETELY! For the first time since we moved in I think. But I also managed to tidy OUR bedroom, which has been in need of sorting out for a very long time. So much happiness and accomplishment! :)

Yesterday was even better, since dearest sister-in-law took the children for the night, leaving Darcy and me free to go the cinema and finally seeing 'Revenge of the Sith'. Goodness knows how many cut-tags I've scrolled past since it came out. But even with cut-tags I got the impression that it was good, but somewhat lacking in the script and acting department. Which I can only concur with.

Darcy was slightly disappointed - he was hoping for more I think, but it *did* lead to interesting discussions when we came home. He thought that the film had two problems - one being the frequently bad acting and clunky script, the other being the downbeat ending. The impression I got whilst watching was that George Lucas is a very visual film maker. I know that when I get a plot-bunny hopping into my head, it's usually in visual form - I can see a scene playing out in front of me. Only then of course I have to translate ot all into words, which is where it gets difficult. George Lucas doesn't really bother much with the words. Since he can make his vision come alive on the screen I get the impression that he only bothers with words (and to some extent plot) to get the film from A to B. Which is why he should really, really have had some help with his script. Yes the actors were often wooden (and I think Ewan McGregor just couldn't be bothered even pretending to try), but very often it was hard to see how they could have done otherwise with the lines they were given. And poor Natalie Portman (who *can* act and really did her best) was confined to walk around in pretty dresses and utter lines better suited to a soap. It's just a sadly missed opportunity. Darcy thought that the whole movie should just have been Yoda, since he was by far the best character and put in the best performance. His animators obviously really cared about making him as good as possible, and given the way he talks his lines sound stilted anyway. (Apparently George Lucas would be happiest if he didn't have to bother with actors at all, and it shows!)

But - I though Anakin rather good and he had an excellent broody scowl (although he went from good-ish to BAD very quickly indeed. It annoyed me.) and of course it all looked stunning! If I ever watch it again I have a feeling I should just turn off the sound and enjoy the pictures. ;)

A couple of other things - how come Padme didn't know she was having twins? Or maybe she did, but for some reason never told Anakin. Odd. Anyway, the 'birth-scene' has to be THE WORST, MOST UNREALISTIC birth *ever* (someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but it was hilariously bad)! Speaking of hilariously bad, but also unintentionally funny, the scene where Darth Vader found out that Padme was dead has had me chuckling ever since I saw it. I mean: "Nooooooooooooo!"?????? If there could be a more cliched way of shooting that, I can't think of it. Just - fabulous. It'll make me laugh for years (which I'm sure I shouldn't, but - hey - I was reminded of anything from Principal Skinner to Andrew!). (And did Padme die of a broken heart? WTF?)

Hmm, that's enough ranting for now. I expected to be entertained, and entertained I was! Oh - and I'm glad they wiped C3PO's memory - otherwise Episode IV would have made no sense!

When we came home from the cinema, we realised that Dr Who was repeated at 10:55, so we happily sat down for some proper acting (and humour and angst!). Can I just say that I *love* Captain Jack? Because I do. He's just so utterly confident in himself and his abilities that I'm all won over. He's like a tall, handsome, charming Tom Cruise. (Sorry, but I never understood the fuss about Tom Cruise btw. Don't mean to offend anyone). And the way he flirts with everything that moves (including robots)? Priceless.

But of course the most wonderful scene was Rose's death. And The Doctors reaction. His face just killed me. I swear this is the closest anything has ever got to BtVS in terms of depth of feeling. And she turned to dust! I mean - *dust*!!! Oh, happy sigh. I never particularly wanted a Dr Who icon before, but now I want one. It has to be animated though - one shot of him picking up her dust, the other shot of his face. *sigh* I'm not suddenly turning into a big fangirl or anything, and I have no desire to read fic, but I might just buy the dvd once it comes out.

OK, shutting up now. Can't remember the last time I rambled this much. ;)

Wonder if they'll let us see Captain Jack's butt on the DVD?
We can hope! (And I did think of you when I saw that bit...)

:Bangs head on desk:

Oh, God! I've got a terrible reputation on LJ, haven't I?

Oh, okay. Not quite so bad, then.

M and I watched the episode again last night and that bit was still incredibly funny.
