Terrific stuff Elisi. And I loved the Batman/Superman analogy, and not just because comics have eaten my brain. Thank you! :) And you're more than welcome to elaborate on the cominc book stuff - my only knowledge comes from the films so I know v. little about any of them.
transformed from cartoon character into fully-fledged, complex, fascinating human being ::nods vigorously::
reduced him back to the shorthand he started out as. I do - and don't - agree with that. Yes they used him as 'Buffy's-ex-who-can-tell-her-she's-still-awesome' yadda, yadda, which I always resented. But I think he carried the lessons he'd learned with him. In TKiM he leaves the chip problem entirely in Buffy's hands. And not knowing about Spike's soul, he is willing to let Buffy let loose an unchipped vampire upon the world. Seems he understood something about the whole shades-of-grey he was struggling with.
