I saw it much more as a journey for him That is very true. I'm only up to 'Superstar' in my re-watch, maybe I should have watched his whole arch before writing this. But then on the other hand AYW does show him back at to where he was before, which (sadly) undermines the lessons he learned.
What broke him was when Buffy seemed to be repaying his commitment to her by taking him for granted or ignoring him. ::nods:: He wanted passion and she wanted security. One of the most telling scenes is in ITW when he almost begs her to hit him, and she walks away.
It was Angel who couldn't face being a normal human around Buffy... Heh.
Partly, though, I think it was just sheer coincidence. That's a very good point. Thank you for all your thoughts - I've added a bit to the essay dealing v. briefly with some of them. :)
