Daleks + children. But not at the same time.

I... have no words: Dalek found in pond.

Of course then fandom (yet again) goes and proves itself to be made of awesome, by immediately making a comm for 'How did the Dalek get there?' stories: [livejournal.com profile] dalekinthepond! :)

******

And, since I'm here, I thought I could relate a couple of stories about the children, which is something I do far too seldom.

From this morning when we were walking to school:

Impish Girl (7): Mum! Guess what I found in school yesterday?
Me: Go on, tell me.
Impish Girl (triumphantly): A pen that doesn't work!
(She held it up under my nose - it is v. short & red)
Impish Girl: See I'm pretending that it is a sonic lipstick. And also an invisible pen and a laser!

And from a couple of weeks ago (but it really stuck with me):

Miss M (10): Mum - what does gormless mean?
Me: Um... stupid. Vacant-looking.
Miss M: OK.
(Pause)
Miss M: What's a gorm?
Me: ...

(Of course the second we got home I looked it up in the OED, and it turns out that 'gorm' comes from the old norse gaum, meaning 'understanding'.)

Go Impish Girl! Only a child would look at a broken pen and see a sonic lipstick/laser.

Heh. I thought gorm referred to something else entirely. Something in the male anatomy.

woo hoo! Daleks were built to last!

Love that picture of the guy holding up the head, all covered in pond-weed.

And: woo OED! Another mystery solved!

I lovers the OED. Hope I never have to, like, buy myown copy!

Adore the snippets of childish wonder. Look! A pen that doesn't work! Legendary find!

My husband has come close to getting me a copy - if by "close" you mean "Priced the DVD version".

Tempting!!

But I work for a university, and so the online OED is at my fingertips, 24/7! Whee!

Gorm away!

Your chillen's make me smile with their very quick minds.

Also, I have to ask, OED=Oxford English Dictionary, right? How much does one cost??!?!? I don't remember my paperback version being that expensive. OR are we talking about the full, bazzillion word version. All I know is I much prefer it to Websters or American Herritage. That's right, I'm dissing my own country's dictionaries, but seriously they add slang words to them all the time for no reason. /rant

Also, I may be begging for your help with Buffy in my GP fic. She is being annoyingly non-Buffy like. I need your expertise. (I don't know what her problem is, just because Conner and George are being purposefully non-helpful...)

My parents bought that, years ago. It came with its very own magnifying glass as part of the package...

Exhibit (Something) in why fandom is so awesome.

I love Impish Girl's imagination! And huh to gormless. That explanation makes perfect sense now.

Love the Dalek in the pond - and the fic comm too.

Love the gormless story - my 10 year old insists that if dismantle is a word then so must mantle be, and things now get mantled rather than put together.

Proper ones are a lot more.
I boggled at the 20 volume one until I remembered how peeved I get when I can't find a word in mine. I just have the wienie little paperback, although you will enjoy the fact I went out of my way to find and Oxford English Dictionary instead of an Oxford Dictionary of American English. My tiny Latin to English Dictionary I keep for HP fic is Oxford too. I am such a dictionary snob.

Flattery will probably get you far! By when would you need it?
Hey I'd offer to bake or knit if I could afford to ship it to you. ;-P I need to actually grit my teeth and write it down. Right now Conner and George are being stubborn and Buffy is stuck blinking at them a lot.

Impish girl may have something there with the sonic lipstick...I like the way lipstick looks, but not how it feels on my lips...tell her to run and patent it!

I just saw that Dalek-in-the-pond story on IO9.com-- why am I not surprised at a new com? ::loves fandom::

Pretend sonic lipstick, that's also an invisible pen and laser. I love how her little mind works!
