ETA: Review of 'season 8' by The Harvard Independent, that echoes my thoughts pretty much exactly. (Except for the ending. Fanfic fills the craving far better.)

I agree with the article too with your exception about the fanfic. Also the bit about Joss being incapable of bad writer 'cause the evidence is irrefutable if you ask me. Even some of the most die hard comic defenders I'm friends with aren't trying to defend them anymore.

Well she(?) contradicts herself - she claims that Joss is incapable of bad writing, and then goes on to point out how parts of the story are just rehashings of what has already been resolved: ie it's bad writing at concept level (if nothing else).

It is just such a wasted opportunity. *sigh* (AtF on the other hand tackles the fallout from a morally ambiguous decision very unflinchingly, taking the characters in new directions - so far at least. Presuming the story holds up, it should be an enjoyable venture! Why couldn't they have done that with Buffy?)

'Cause Joss doesn't really have much guts, IMO. He is Mr. Angelus Has To Be in Vamp!Face When He Kills Calender, after all. Is it a coincidence that the most touchy storylines came under Marti (the AR and Evil!Willow)? My opinion is it's not.

I really don't think he cares enough about them. Seems pretty evident from the haphazard artwork, unimaginative storylines and at times horrible characterizations. Bah.

I don't know about the 'caring' part... but I think he found a *story* he wanted to tell and made the characters fit it, rather than the other way around.

Anyway, he's made sure that *I* don't care, which makes life so much easier! :)
