Spuffy. Lovely, brilliant Spuffy.

Just realised something v. obvious. When it comes to BtVS I'm a shipper first and foremost. It's not that I don't enjoy all the other characters and stories, but the reason I got sucked in (/obsessed) was Teh Spuffy. When I read Buffy fic I generally come at it from a shippy angle. With AtS I'm much more leaning towards gen. Oh I think Teh Spangel is fun and shiny, but I love the first 4 seasons *tons*... Watched 'Somnambulist' today, and although Penn really is rather dull I loved the story:

Angel: “I’ve been having dreams.”
Wesley: “Dreams?”
Angel: “Killing dreams. Always the same. (Swallows) I-I stalk them, toy with them, mark them while they are still alive. Before they can die from their fear, I feed on them.”
Cordy: “Okay. So you’ve been having nightmares, it doesn’t mean...”
Angel: “They’re not nightmares. I’ve enjoyed them.”
Cordy: “Oh.”

Ah Angel... *loves Angel entirely too much*

but, i just had to say that i really got into the BtVS fandom because of Spike and Spuffy.
especially the reading of fanfic.

Same here. It was Fool For Love that did it. I only discovered fandom and fanfic after the show ended, but I've done my best to make up for lost time. :) (Why can't I spell today? Argh!)

Yeah, Spike may have loved the "fists and fangs against the wall" aspect of being a vampire but Angel was always about prolonging the agony of the victim as long as he could manage.

And isn't it great that people are still writing such great Spuffy years after the show ended? Darn their sinister attraction.

I'm usually gen-ish about most shows, but even when I'm shippy I think my favorite fics are ones that are ensemble pieces but simply foreground the ship instead of making it the whole story. Those tend to be found most often in epics, but they're not that common.

Yes I love those too - they feel more like the show, in that they tie lots of different characters together. And I always admire people who can do big, complicated plots. That said, I love totally shippy fics too - those where the rest of the world falls away and leaves just the couple. Either way, I'm good. Mmmm, fic. :)

I know what you mean about AtS. I think it's a very unshippy show; romantic relationships are sort of beside the point. Though Angel and Spike sniping at each other in season 5 is entertaining!

Or rather they're almost only there to break your heart. (Spangel is the only ship that survived, and that was only because it was all subtext. Which is good!)

It's funny, because I was talking about the whole obsession/addiction thing with my husband the other day, and he said something about trying to become *less* addicted, and I just stared at him and said that I never wanted to be not addicted to BtVS. Then he shook his head very sadly. Heh.
