First impressions (Dune 2)
A few very short thoughts, I'm still processing.
Firstly - the sandworms emerging out of the giant storm for the big battle was every bit as epic as I could ever have imagined. <3 As I saw the thumpers I got chills (a bit like the lighting of the beacons of Gondor?) and sort of just curled up in eager anticipation. Perfect movie moment, 11/10.
Overall though... I am trying to just think through everything. Of course adaptations are always changing things, but here the story aim (and indeed the ending) have been changed, and I want to puzzle out why, and how the stories sit alongside each other. Stilgar's entire character was changed, and Jessica's arc was wildly different. Alia never even appeared in person, and baby Leto was missing entirely... (Jamis' funeral might be the main thing I wish they'd kept. It's one of my favourite scenes in all of fiction.)
It's like - the inflection points all changed and the beats of the story fall differently (even if a lot of them are the same beats).
It's chewy and complicated and I might have meta at some point.
