Happy Doctor Who Day!

sea_thoughts here is Peter Capaldi on Ncuti Gatwa taking on the role of The Doctor

On Mastodon, Alex Gurney is posting a thread from an alternate universe where the Doctor was always a woman (his choice for Four is especially perfect and brilliant):

If I had been prepared at all, then this is when I'd have posted a long indepth analysis of the Chibnall era, but - I haven't even started writing it, so there we go...

Good point. :)

IKR? Miriam Margoyles would have been perfect. I could immediately picture it!
I must admit to great regret that we never got to see that version of Six, though I can’t say I’m sure about Seven!
Agreed on both fronts.

To me June Whitfield would seem a shoe-in to replace Jon Pertwee, and Patsy Byrne seems a good replacement for Tom Baker. Recalling that I thought Peter Davison was, at the time, too young I've gone for someone who was a decade older than him at the time and; funnily enough actually played Jon Pertwee's first companion, Caroline John.
The only one I could up with to match Colin Baker was Shiela White, who I remember mostly from I, Claudius, but then I was reminded of Sylvestra Le Touzel, who actually seems perfect for that mixture of mania; zany & intense unpredictablity ~ also I can actually visualise her in Colin Baker's outfit.
As far for an alternative to Sylvester McCoy it surely has to be Josie Lawrence.
Finally I'd have to go with Sally Knyvette, who played Jenna Stannis on Blake's 7, and Alice Krige is the first name that comes to mind to play the role instead of Richard E. Grant, but that may be because she was born in South Africa and he was born in Swaziland, so I'd think of Harriet Walter too. though there is someone in my head from BBC Afternoon radio Plays in the 1990s, but her name escapes me ~ I would find it amusing if that turned out to be Harriet Walter.
After that it would be very hard to think of people as I gave up regular TV before Scream of the Shalka was made.
Then I set my mind to the revival proper and the three names I came up with were Archie Panjabi; Shelley Conn, and someone I almost dismissed as I could not remember her name; then remembered she's been in Eastenders much earlier than I remembered, Michell Gayle.
All three are in the right age range, but Archie Panjabi has held her own against some of the best in the business, and would certainly beat Christopher Eccleston as a fit for the Doctor ( my opinion of him in the role is one I may, possibly, have voiced before... ); she also has the comedic chops; evidenced in Bend It Like Beckham (her co-star in that, Parminder Nagra, was also on the short list).
Can't get my mind to do a 'Tennant' but as an alternative to Matt Smith there is Amber Rose Revah, who played a supporting role in I Can't Think Straight & The World Unseen; very different roles with the same range as Matt Smith ( who I'd never heard of before he played the Doctor ).
As for who should have replaced Matt Smith I wanted Nina Sosanya at the time, and will ever regret that she never played The Doctor. She is who I see when I try to write my Doctor Who stories.
Gugu Mbatha-Raw!
Cannot believe I forgot her but, having seen her; at least in part in the Black Mirror episode, San Junipero I can totally see her playing the role of the Doctor instead of David Tennant; same mixture of intense tortured fury & humour & emotional release.
Accepting that Nina Sosanya would eventually have been replaced in the role I pondered who could matych Jodie Whittaker, and came to the names of Abigail Thorn & Maxine Peake as possibilities.
So disappointed that Yasmin Finney is not going to be around; and all non-white main cast would have been a wonderful opportunity, and I know nothing about the actor about to take on the role or the; at first sight, Rose look-a-like (which is unfair on Billie Piper, as I hated Rose but consider Billie Piper one the best actors of her generation), so cannot know how they will turn out ~ does seem a hell of a burden to place on two incredibly young actors, but may be an incredible opportunity for them as well.
Just wish I trusted Russell T. Davis...
Anyway, this manic should-be-writing-something-productive ( or... I dunno, fucking sleeping ) rant-y pseudo-intellectual exercise needs to end.
O Nina! Why couldn't it have been you!!!

I really would. It's what I was expecting, but hey ho. She's said that she'd love to do an episode in Ancient Egypt, which fans have been wanting for AGES, and with the Doctor now Black that could really work in brilliant ways.

Well Ncuti is 30 (doesn't look it!) so I figure he'll cope. But Millie Gibson is only 18, so I really hope it'll be a good experience for her. (I can only presume that she's excellent, or they wouldn't have given her the role.)
Just wish I trusted Russell T. Davis...
I trust him to be interesting and entertaining. (That might have been Chibnall's worst flaw. He made the show dull.)

Well it was by FAR the most comprehensive, so I appreciated it. <3

There's still time!

(Anonymous) 2022-11-26 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)All I know about Zawe Ashton is the name; she's been in a couple of things I've heard of. Not even tried to watch The Handmaid's Tale; bought an edition of the book when the series came out, but not tried to read it; may never do so as I recall it being fearfully traumatic when I tried to read it when I was not much more than a kid (got it, I think, in case I ever feel strong enough to read it).
Might have to put a post together with some clips of the various actors; might be fun to sit back and see how many peeps start wars over something so irrelevantly interesting.
We need someone different from the aging fanboys in charge of the show; someone who might take the programme in some actually interesting directions.
There have to be people out there who could do that surely!

Haven't read (or watched) Handmaid's Tale - it doesn't seem like my kind of thing. Too close to possible reality.

That would be fun!

One would really hope so. Let's see what happens once RTD leaves...

(Anonymous) 2022-11-26 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)Technically speaking also we've also had a non-caucasian; despite physical appearance, Doctor as I believe Peter Davison is mixed race.

And you are correct wrt Peter Davidson, and I never knew!
"Peter Davison’s dad, Claude Moffett was originally from British Guiana (now Guyana). Claude was also mixed race but his ancestry – as part-Afro-Guyanese – means that he, and his son Peter, can trace their ancestry back to Sub-Saharan African."
