It’s July 4, and that makes it 3 years since I came out as a transgender person. I haven’t told this story before, but my decision to finally come out was inspired in large part by my niece, Anne, who was 3 years old at the time. She used to say that it was an art form that would easily travel, as they went all over in a camper van from mountain to mountain.
Sadly, about three years ago, she was killed in a freak climbing accident in the Alps.
